Edible craft to have wings stuffed with food and medical supplies for humanitarian missions

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Using airdrops to deliver relief to disaster zones may sound like a simple solution, but these missions have proved to be inaccurate, wasteful and expensive. With that in mind, ex-British Army veteran Nigel Gifford is developing a drone with edible wings that is capable of carrying 100-pounds of vacuum-packed food and medical supplies. Although in early stages, the'Pouncer' would be released from a plane or catapult and dropped within a 25 mile radius of the target. Draper Satellite Image Chronology: Pure ML Solution Damien Soukhavong

#artificialintelligence

The Draper Satellite Image Chronology Competition (Chronos) ran on Kaggle from April to June 2016. This competition, which was novel in a number of ways, challenged Kagglers to put order to time and space. That is, given a dataset of satellite images taken over the span of five days, the 424 brave competitors were required to determine their correct order. The challenge, which Draper hosted in order to contribute to a deeper understanding of how to process and analyze images, was a first for Kaggle--it allowed hand annotation as long as processes used were replicable. While the winners of the competition used a mixture of machine learning, human intuition, and brute force, Damien Soukhavong (Laurae), a Competitions and Discussion Expert on Kaggle, explains in this interview how factors like the limited number of training samples which deterred others from using pure machine learning methods appealed to him.

Alphabet's Project Wing Drones To Deliver Chipotle Burritos In Virginia Tech

International Business Times

Alphabet, Google's parent company, is joining hands with fast food chain Chipotle to deliver food using drones, Bloomberg reported. The hybrid aircraft can both fly and hover in place. The experimental delivery by Alphabet's Project Wing will be available only for select employees and students at Virginia Tech. The trials are due to start this month and will last a couple of weeks. Deliveries will be made from a Chipotle delivery truck and the drones will lower the food using a winch while hovering overhead.

Is AI RACIST? Robot-judged beauty contest picks mostly white winners out of 6,000 contestants

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Just months after Microsoft's Tay artificial intelligence sent racist messages on Twitter, another AI seems to have followed suit. More than 6,000 selfies of individuals who live all over the world and range in ages of 18 to 69 were judged by a robot in a beauty contest last week. But when the results came in, there was something missing - it turned out the robots did not like people with dark skin. The Beauty.AI beauty contest put together of robot judges to determine the winners. Beauty.AI used five algorithms to act as judges in a beauty contest.

Alphabet Drones to Test Burrito Delivery at Virginia Tech

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

Google parent Alphabet Inc. plans this month to use drones to deliver burritos to a small number of staff and students at Virginia Tech, a limited test of the tech giant's ambitious plans to quicken deliveries with unmanned aircraft. In the tests, drones from Alphabet's research lab, X, will ferry burritos from a Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. CMG -0.49 % food truck to an official several hundred feet away, who will distribute the orders to waiting customers, Alphabet said. The flights will mark X's first drone deliveries in the U.S. to people who aren't Alphabet employees. Drone-delivery startup Flirtey Inc. delivered medicine to a rural health clinic last year, in another test. Alphabet said its test will entail a few hundred deliveries to students and staff from a nearby office building.

Star Wars speeders for troops?

FOX News

Remember those speeder bikes in Star Wars that raced through the air? Soldiers and Marines may get to zoom around the battlespace on a type of real-life version in the not-so-distant future. The new vehicle (which flies using rotors) has been dubbed the Joint Tactical Aerial Resupply Vehicle, or JTARV. Malloy Aeronautics and SURVICE Engineering Company teamed up to further develop Malloy's Hoverbike for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. The U.S. military believes it could possibly carry teams rapidly and nimbly throughout the battlespace, and a robotic version could even be used to deliver supplies by itself.

Apple announcements: iPhone 7, Mario game, new watch

Boston Herald

At Apple's iPhone 7 unveiling in San Francisco on Wednesday, the tech powerhouse revealed a host of new and updated hardware and software, including a new type of headphone jack and souped-up camera. As expected, iPhone is removing the standard analog headphone jack and forcing headphones to use its "Lightning" connector, which plugs into the phone's charging port. The iPhone 7 will come with an adapter so older earphones can still be used. But Apple is pushing Apple AirPods, which CEO Tim Cook says are a "breakthrough design," wireless headphones that sync across all Apple devices and respond to touch that can access Siri. The AirPods are shipping in late October and cost 160.

BuildingIQ Employs AI for Maximum Building System Efficiency

#artificialintelligence

BuildingIQ, a provider of energy management software headquartered in California, provides tools to commercial building owners and managers to improve the energy efficiency of their building operations. BuildingIQ offers solutions that use technology originally developed by the Energy Division of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia's national lab. The average commercial building wastes 30% of the energy it uses. Even simple changes, such as adjusting temperature settings and ensuring that lights are not on when no one is around, can produce substantial savings. BuildingIQ has responded by developing an energy management system driven by artificial intelligence (AI) that optimizes HVAC systems for maximum efficiency.

Obama has short chat with Duterte after Manila leader's learning curve slur

The Japan Times

VIENTIANE – U.S. President Barack Obama and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte shook hands and had a brief chat on Wednesday, officials said, easing a standoff after Duterte called Obama a "son of a bitch" ahead of a summit of Asian leaders in Laos. The presidents of the two longtime allies were due to hold talks on Tuesday but the White House canceled the meeting after Duterte's insult. "I'm very happy that it happened," Philippines' foreign minister, Perfecto Yasay, said of their short meeting. "It all springs from the fact that the relationship between the Philippines and the United States is firm, very strong." Duterte had his outburst on Monday when he was defending his war on drugs that has killed at least 2,400 Filipinos.

A Founder's Story: Beagle Goes Global

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Lawyer caught up with Cian O'Sullivan, founder of Beagle, the automated contract analysis system that is just celebrating a year and a half of operations and landing VW as a client. We discussed how Beagle came about, why maybe sometimes it's better not to talk to lawyers about AI and how come the company has one of the world's largest auto companies as a client, and then some. Cian O'Sullivan's web camera is not working when Artificial Lawyer calls for a video conference and so is treated to a picture of a soccer pitch in Colombia that the legal tech company founder took on his travels. The international reference makes sense once you start to talk to O'Sullivan. The Canadian travels a lot.
