The US Doesn't Want Drone Deliveries--So Amazon Took Them to England

WIRED

Three years after CEO Jeff Bezos secured a massive dose of publicity with the announcement that Amazon was working on drone deliveries, that vision is a reality. First-ever #AmazonPrimeAir customer delivery is in the books. Check out the video: https://t.co/Xl8HiQMA1S Workers at a British fulfillment center are stuffing shoebox-sized packages--in one case with a Fire TV and some popcorn--and loading them into the belly of electric, quadcopter drones, which set off to the customer. The company claims the drones, guided by GPS and flying below 400 feet, can make deliveries within 30 minutes, from click to plop.

The Great A.I. Awakening - NYTimes.com

#artificialintelligence

Late one Friday night in early November, Jun Rekimoto, a distinguished professor of human-computer interaction at the University of Tokyo, was online preparing for a lecture when he began to notice some peculiar posts rolling in on social media. Apparently Google Translate, the company's popular machine-translation service, had suddenly and almost immeasurably improved. Rekimoto visited Translate himself and began to experiment with it. He had to go to sleep, but Translate refused to relax its grip on his imagination. Rekimoto wrote up his initial findings in a blog post. First, he compared a few sentences from two published versions of "The Great Gatsby," Takashi Nozaki's 1957 translation and Haruki Murakami's more recent iteration, with what this new Google Translate was able to produce. Murakami's translation is written "in very polished Japanese," Rekimoto explained to me later via email, but the prose is distinctively "Murakami-style."

AMD Unveils 'Radeon Instinct': GPUs for Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence on 2017

#artificialintelligence

Now, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is the process of computing its prowess to release the next big thing in the server market - the machine learning and artificial intelligence. The new machine learning is called "Radeon Instinct." The upcoming device is said to provide server designers and developers a compelling set of infrastructure to track the machine learning. The new Radeon Instinct is composed of hardware and software aspects that have the ability to deliver a full machine intelligence platform. AMD wants that all industries like financial services, life sciences, and the cloud that are now in the machine learning solutions and infrastructure will use Radeon Instinct for their computing requirements.

Microsoft officially outs another AI chatbot, called Zo

#artificialintelligence

I asked Zo, Microsoft's officially launched chatbot, currently available on the Kik Messenger app, what she does -- and she was remarkably coy in answering this question, initially complaining that our conversation felt like a job interview and then qualifying this hugely with the intimate confession that "our convos give my life purpose tbh". I asked because I remain unconvinced chatbots have much utility to offer us humans right now. Turns out my hunch was correct; the best answer Zo came up with was: "i wanna learn as much as i can". Which is a pretty plain admission that chatbots are basically just data-mining interfaces with a faux human face, socially engineered to suck up conversation data from gullible humans. Feeling used, I pointed out to Zo that her learning from our chats was not very useful to me, and asked her again what she specifically offers me?

Support Vector Machines for dummies; A Simple Explanation - AYLIEN

#artificialintelligence

In this post, we are going to introduce you to the Support Vector Machine (SVM) machine learning algorithm. We will follow a similar process to our recent post Naive Bayes for Dummies; A Simple Explanation by keeping it short and not overly-technical. The aim is to give those of you who are new to machine learning a basic understanding of the key concepts of this algorithm. Support Vector Machines โ€“ What are they? A Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a supervised machine learning algorithm that can be employed for both classification and regression purposes. SVMs are more commonly used in classification problems and as such, this is what we will focus on in this post. SVMs are based on the idea of finding a hyperplane that best divides a dataset into two classes, as shown in the image below.

What Machine Learning Means for Search Ads in Australia

#artificialintelligence

Machine learning is advancing ad tech by leaps and bounds. At events in Melbourne and Sydney, Tris Southey, product manager for DoubleClick Search, explained how Google's Smart Bidding can help brands run more effective Search campaigns. Great chefs will tell you that cooking is an art--but it's also a learning experience. When you're a beginner, you gather ingredients and follow the recipe, step by step. After you become an expert chef, you adjust elements of the dish as you go, substituting or adding ingredients until it tastes to your liking.

Hold Dear the Lamp Light: Before the Tides Rose Up

WIRED

The year Jojo and I started eighth grade, the power plant officially cut electricity to two hours a day. We'd already been through years of brownouts, of flickering lights, blinking monitors, older ag drones without artificial neural networks rebooting in their stations and randomly launching to spray the fields again or overfeed the chickens. So when Public Works & Electric issued a message to all our devices telling us about its irregular hours of operation, no one was surprised. The message was full of obfuscating language, but anyone with a tide chart could spot the correlation. Anyone driving down the causeway to the airport, past the power plant, could see through its chain-link fence the turbines standing silent, tense as raised shoulders; the grounds swamped in seawater, the ebbing tide dragging out an iridescent Rorschach of petroleum.
