Google's search engine not as good as its competitors for news, research finds

The Guardian

Australians trying to stay up to date with the news by searching online may be better off ditching Google and using its competitors, research by Monash University has shown. On Australia Day "Grace Tame" was the most popular search term used on Google โ€“ reflecting the fact that she had just been made Australian of the Year. The top 50 results delivered by Google included only 70% of professional news websites, compared with 94% for the same search term on Bing and 82% on Ecosia. Last Sunday Australians rushing to find out more about the suddenly announced coronavirus lockdown in Perth made "perth lockdown" the most popular search term. Google delivered only 80% of news websites in the top 50, compared with 90% from Bing and 86% from Ecosia.

These measures, such as euclidean distance or cosine similarity, can often be found in algorithms such as k-NN, UMAP, HDBSCAN, etc. Understanding the field of distance measures is more important than you might realize. Take k-NN for example, a technique often used for supervised learning. As a default, it often uses euclidean distance. However, what if your data is highly dimensional?


Ranking vs. Classifying: Measuring Knowledge Base Completion Quality

Knowledge base completion (KBC) methods aim at inferring missing facts from the information present in a knowledge base (KB) by estimating the likelihood of candidate facts. In the prevailing evaluation paradigm, models do not actually decide whether a new fact should be accepted or not but are solely judged on the position of true facts in a likelihood ranking with other candidates. We argue that consideration of binary predictions is essential to reflect the actual KBC quality, and propose a novel evaluation paradigm, designed to provide more transparent model selection criteria for a realistic scenario. We construct the data set FB14k-QAQ where instead of single facts, we use KB queries, i.e., facts where one entity is replaced with a variable, and construct corresponding sets of entities that are correct answers. We randomly remove some of these correct answers from the data set, simulating the realistic scenario of real-world entities missing from a KB. This way, we can explicitly measure a model's ability to handle queries that have more correct answers in the real world than in the KB, including the special case of queries without any valid answer. The latter especially contrasts the ranking setting. We evaluate a number of state-of-the-art KB embeddings models on our new benchmark. The differences in relative performance between ranking-based and classification-based evaluation that we observe in our experiments confirm our hypothesis that good performance on the ranking task does not necessarily translate to good performance on the actual completion task. Our results motivate future work on KB embedding models with better prediction separability and, as a first step in that direction, we propose a simple variant of TransE that encourages thresholding and achieves a significant improvement in classification F1 score relative to the original TransE.


Directive Explanations for Actionable Explainability in Machine Learning Applications

This paper investigates the prospects of using directive explanations to assist people in achieving recourse of machine learning decisions. Directive explanations list which specific actions an individual needs to take to achieve their desired outcome. If a machine learning model makes a decision that is detrimental to an individual (e.g. denying a loan application), then it needs to both explain why it made that decision and also explain how the individual could obtain their desired outcome (if possible). At present, this is often done using counterfactual explanations, but such explanations generally do not tell individuals how to act. We assert that counterfactual explanations can be improved by explicitly providing people with actions they could use to achieve their desired goal. This paper makes two contributions. First, we present the results of an online study investigating people's perception of directive explanations. Second, we propose a conceptual model to generate such explanations. Our online study showed a significant preference for directive explanations ($p<0.001$). However, the participants' preferred explanation type was affected by multiple factors, such as individual preferences, social factors, and the feasibility of the directives. Our findings highlight the need for a human-centred and context-specific approach for creating directive explanations.


A metaheuristic for crew scheduling in a pickup-and-delivery problem with time windows

A vehicle routing and crew scheduling problem (VRCSP) consists of simultaneously planning the routes of a fleet of vehicles and scheduling the crews, where the vehicle-crew correspondence is not fixed through time. This allows a greater planning flexibility and a more efficient use of the fleet, but in counterpart, a high synchronisation is demanded. In this work, we present a VRCSP where pickup-and-delivery requests with time windows have to be fulfilled over a given planning horizon by using trucks and drivers. Crews can be composed of 1 or 2 drivers and any of them can be relieved in a given set of locations. Moreover, they are allowed to travel among locations with non-company shuttles, at an additional cost that is minimised. As our problem considers distinct routes for trucks and drivers, we have an additional flexibility not contemplated in other previous VRCSP given in the literature where a crew is handled as an indivisible unit. We tackle this problem with a two-stage sequential approach: a set of truck routes is computed in the first stage and a set of driver routes consistent with the truck routes is obtained in the second one. We design and evaluate the performance of a metaheuristic based algorithm for the latter stage. Our algorithm is mainly a GRASP with a perturbation procedure that allows reusing solutions already found in case the search for new solutions becomes difficult. This procedure together with other to repair infeasible solutions allow us to find high-quality solutions on instances of 100 requests spread across 15 cities with a fleet of 12-32 trucks (depending on the planning horizon) in less than an hour. We also conclude that the possibility of carrying an additional driver leads to a decrease of the cost of external shuttles by about 60% on average with respect to individual crews and, in some cases, to remove this cost completely.


Policy Analysis using Synthetic Controls in Continuous-Time

Counterfactual estimation using synthetic controls is one of the most successful recent methodological developments in causal inference. Despite its popularity, the current description only considers time series aligned across units and synthetic controls expressed as linear combinations of observed control units. We propose a continuous-time alternative that models the latent counterfactual path explicitly using the formalism of controlled differential equations. This model is directly applicable to the general setting of irregularly-aligned multivariate time series and may be optimized in rich function spaces - thereby substantially improving on some limitations of existing approaches.


Mining Feature Relationships in Data

When faced with a new dataset, most practitioners begin by performing exploratory data analysis to discover interesting patterns and characteristics within data. Techniques such as association rule mining are commonly applied to uncover relationships between features (attributes) of the data. However, association rules are primarily designed for use on binary or categorical data, due to their use of rule-based machine learning. A large proportion of real-world data is continuous in nature, and discretisation of such data leads to inaccurate and less informative association rules. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach called feature relationship mining (FRM), which uses a genetic programming approach to automatically discover symbolic relationships between continuous or categorical features in data. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed approach is the first such symbolic approach with the goal of explicitly discovering relationships between features. Empirical testing on a variety of real-world datasets shows the proposed method is able to find high-quality, simple feature relationships which can be easily interpreted and which provide clear and non-trivial insight into data.


A Novel Approach for Classification and Forecasting of Time Series in Particle Accelerators

The beam interruptions (interlocks) of particle accelerators, despite being necessary safety measures, lead to abrupt operational changes and a substantial loss of beam time. A novel time series classification approach is applied to decrease beam time loss in the High Intensity Proton Accelerator complex by forecasting interlock events. The forecasting is performed through binary classification of windows of multivariate time series. The time series are transformed into Recurrence Plots which are then classified by a Convolutional Neural Network, which not only captures the inner structure of the time series but also utilizes the advances of image classification techniques. Our best performing interlock-to-stable classifier reaches an Area under the ROC Curve value of $0.71 \pm 0.01$ compared to $0.65 \pm 0.01$ of a Random Forest model, and it can potentially reduce the beam time loss by $0.5 \pm 0.2$ seconds per interlock.


"Is depression related to cannabis?": A knowledge-infused model for Entity and Relation Extraction with Limited Supervision

With strong marketing advocacy of the benefits of cannabis use for improved mental health, cannabis legalization is a priority among legislators. However, preliminary scientific research does not conclusively associate cannabis with improved mental health. In this study, we explore the relationship between depression and consumption of cannabis in a targeted social media corpus involving personal use of cannabis with the intent to derive its potential mental health benefit. We use tweets that contain an association among three categories annotated by domain experts - Reason, Effect, and Addiction. The state-of-the-art Natural Langauge Processing techniques fall short in extracting these relationships between cannabis phrases and the depression indicators. We seek to address the limitation by using domain knowledge; specifically, the Drug Abuse Ontology for addiction augmented with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lexicons for mental health. Because of the lack of annotations due to the limited availability of the domain experts' time, we use supervised contrastive learning in conjunction with GPT-3 trained on a vast corpus to achieve improved performance even with limited supervision. Experimental results show that our method can significantly extract cannabis-depression relationships better than the state-of-the-art relation extractor. High-quality annotations can be provided using a nearest neighbor approach using the learned representations that can be used by the scientific community to understand the association between cannabis and depression better.


Inferring spatial relations from textual descriptions of images

Generating an image from its textual description requires both a certain level of language understanding and common sense knowledge about the spatial relations of the physical entities being described. In this work, we focus on inferring the spatial relation between entities, a key step in the process of composing scenes based on text. More specifically, given a caption containing a mention to a subject and the location and size of the bounding box of that subject, our goal is to predict the location and size of an object mentioned in the caption. Previous work did not use the caption text information, but a manually provided relation holding between the subject and the object. In fact, the used evaluation datasets contain manually annotated ontological triplets but no captions, making the exercise unrealistic: a manual step was required; and systems did not leverage the richer information in captions. Here we present a system that uses the full caption, and Relations in Captions (REC-COCO), a dataset derived from MS-COCO which allows to evaluate spatial relation inference from captions directly. Our experiments show that: (1) it is possible to infer the size and location of an object with respect to a given subject directly from the caption; (2) the use of full text allows to place the object better than using a manually annotated relation. Our work paves the way for systems that, given a caption, decide which entities need to be depicted and their respective location and sizes, in order to then generate the final image.
