Today, YouTube is the largest user-driven video content provider in the world; it has become a major platform for disseminating multimedia information. A major contribution to its success comes from the user-to-user social experience that differentiates it from traditional content broadcasters. This work examines the social network aspect of YouTube by measuring the full-scale YouTube subscription graph, comment graph, and video content corpus. We find YouTube to deviate significantly from network characteristics that mark traditional online social networks, such as homophily, reciprocative linking, and assortativity. However, comparing to reported characteristics of another content-driven online social network, Twitter, YouTube is remarkably similar. Examining the social and content facets of user popularity, we find a stronger correlation between a user's social popularity and his/her most popular content as opposed to typical content popularity. Finally, we demonstrate an application of our measurements for classifying YouTube Partners, who are selected users that share YouTube's advertisement revenue. Results are motivating despite the highly imbalanced nature of the classification problem.


Evolutionary Clustering and Analysis of User Behaviour in Online Forums

In this paper we cluster and analyse temporal user behaviour in online communities. We adapt a simple unsupervised clustering algorithm to an evolutionary setting where we cluster users into prototypical behavioural roles based on features derived from their ego-centric reply-graphs. We then analyse changes in the role membership of the users over time, the change in role composition of forums over time and examine the differences between forums in terms of role composition. We perform this analysis on 200 forums from a popular national bulletin board and 14 enterprise technical support forums.


Emotional Divergence Influences Information Spreading in Twitter

We analyze data about the micro-blogging site Twitter using sentiment extraction techniques. From an information perspective, Twitter users are involved mostly in two processes: information creation and subsequent distribution (tweeting), and pure information distribution (retweeting), with pronounced preference to the first. However a rather substantial fraction of tweets are retweeted. Here, we address the role of the sentiment expressed in tweets for their potential aftermath. We find that although the overall sentiment (polarity) does not influence the probability of a tweet to be retweeted, a new measure called "emotional divergence" does have an impact. In general, tweets with high emotional diversity have a better chance of being retweeted, hence influencing the distribution of information.


More or Less: Amount of Personal Information Displayed in Social Network Site Profiles and Its Impact on Viewers’ Intentions to Socialize with the Profile Owner

This paper presents the results of an experiment that employed a 2 (low vs. high information) by 2 (male vs. female profile) design to investigate the relationship between amount of information displayed in a Social Network Site (SNS) profile and profile viewers’ intentions to engage in further social interactions (communicate online, add to SNS profile, and meet face-to-face) with the profile owner. The results indicate that more information increases the likelihood of relationship initiation for male profiles but decreases it for female profiles. Also, viewers are inclined to initiate an interaction when less information is presented in an SNS profile of a person from the opposite sex; but require more information from their own sex.


What Catches Your Attention? An Empirical Study of Attention Patterns in Community Forums

Online community managers work towards building and managing communities around a given brand or topic. A risk imposed on such managers is that their community may die out and its utility diminish to users. Understanding what drives attention to content and the dynamics of discussions in a given community informs the community manager and/or host with the factors that are associated with attention. In this paper we gain insights into the idiosyncrasies that individual community forums exhibit in their attention patterns and how the factors that impact activity differ. We glean such insights by using logistic regression models for identifying seed posts and explore the effectiveness of a range of features. Our findings show that the discussion behaviour of different communities is clearly impacted by different factors.


Talk of the City: Our Tweets, Our Community Happiness

The literature of urban sociology and that of psychology have separately established two relationships: the first has linked characteristics of a community to its residents’ well-being, the second has linked well-being of individuals to their use of words. No one has hitherto explored the potential transitive relationship - that between characteristics of a community and its residents' use of words. We test this relationship by performing three steps. We consider Twitter users in a variety of London census communities; extract the subject matter of their tweets using "topic models"; and study the relationship between topics and community socio-economic well-being. We find that certain topics are correlated (positively and negatively) with community deprivation. Users in more deprived community tweet about wedding parties, matters expressed in Spanish/Portuguese, and celebrity gossips. By contrast, those in less deprived communities tweet about vacations, professional use of social media, environmental issues, sports, and health issues. We finally show that monitoring the subject matter of tweets not only offers insights into community well-being, but it is also a reasonable way of predicting community deprivation scores.


Using Complex Event Processing for Modeling Semantic Requests in Real-Time Social Media Monitoring

Social media analytics has been attracting considerable attention in both research and industry due to the increasing popularity of social media usage. As a subset, social media monitoring describes the process of continuous monitoring of a subject matter in social media. From our point of view, the key requirements for such systems are i) high throughput and real-time processing of incoming data, ii) a user-friendly way to define complex situations of interests that make use of formalized background knowledge and iii) capabilities to perform actions based on gained insights instead of a pure monitoring system. In this paper, we propose a system for (pro) active, real-time social media monitoring. Firstly, we describe the conceptual architecture of our system and necessary pre-processing steps. Secondly, we introduce our concept of semantic requests that is capable to extend event pattern definitions with background knowledge. Finally, we show the usefulness of this system in two different domains: Real-time political opinion tracking and proactive establishment of relationships with consumers in order to perform a new form of real-time marketing. The main advantage of our approach is a simplified, expressive way to formulate event patterns in social media applications.


More of a Receiver Than a Giver: Why Do People Unfollow in Twitter?

We propose a logistic regression model taking into account two analytically different sets of factors–structure and action. The factors include individual, dyadic, and triadic properties between ego and alter whose tie breakup is under consideration. From the fitted model using a large-scale data, we discover 5 structural and 7 actional variables to have significant explanatory power for unfollow. One unique finding from our quantitative analysis is that people appreciate receiving acknowledgements from others even in virtually unilateral communication relationships and are less likely to unfollow them: people are more of a receiver than a giver.


Catching the Long-Tail: Extracting Local News Events from Twitter

Twitter, used in 200 countries with over 250 milliontweets a day, is a rich source of local news from aroundthe world. Many events of local importance are first reportedon Twitter, including many that never reach newschannels. Further, there are often only a few tweetsreporting each such event, in contrast with the largervolumes that follow events of wider significance. Eventhough such events may be primarily of local importance,they can also be of critical interest to some specificbut possibly far flung entities: For example, a firein a supplier’s factory half-way around the world maybe of interest even from afar. In this paper we describehow this ‘long tail’ of events can be detected in spite oftheir sparsity.We then extract and correlate informationfrom multiple tweets describing the same event. Ourgeneric architecture for converting a tweet-stream intoevent-objects uses locality sensitive hashing, classification,boosting, information extraction and clustering.Our results, based on millions of tweets monitored overmany months, appear to validate our approach and architecture:We achieved success-rates in the 80% rangefor event detection and 76% on event-correlation; we also reduced tweet-comparisons by 80% using LSH.


Coping with the Document Frequency Bias in Sentiment Classification

In this article, we study the polarity detection problem using linear supervised classifiers. We show the interest of penalizing the document frequencies in the regularization process to increase the accuracy. We propose a systematic comparison of different loss and regularization functions on this particular task using the Amazon dataset. Then, we evaluate our models according to three criteria: accuracy, sparsity and subjectivity. The subjectivity is measured by projecting our dictionary and optimized weight vector on the SentiWordNet lexicon. This original approach highlights a bias in the selection of the relevant terms during the regularization procedure: frequent terms are overweighted compared to their intrinsic subjectivities.We show that this bias appears whatever the chosen loss or regularization and on all datasets: it is closely link to the gradient descent technique. Penalizing the document frequency during the learning step enables us to improve significantly our performances. A lot of sentimental markers appear rarely and thus, are unappreciated by statistical learning algorithms. Explicitly boosting their influences leads to increasing the accuracy in the sentiment classification task.
