The robots are coming and, if media hype is to be believed, they're going to put us all out of a job. Predictions about the future impact of technology on our jobs sound bleak, with suggestions artificial intelligence (AI) and automation could drive global unemployment as high as 50% over the next 30 years. The UK is expected to reach this position even sooner. But those forecasting a catastrophic conflict where human intelligence is pitted against the ever-expanding might of the machines are forgetting that technology - no matter how intelligent it becomes - is ultimately designed and operated by humans. Robots simply aren't able to go it alone.


Tiny engines power micro-bots

Scientists have created the world's tiniest practical engines, and these light-powered machines could one day power microscopic robots small enough to enter living cells, the researchers say. As technological innovations make devices smaller and smaller, scientists are developing machines that are only the size of complex molecules -- nanometers, or billionths of a meter, in scale. In comparison, the average human hair is about 100,000 nanometers wide. One of the main reasons "nanobots" remain in the realm of science fiction is that figuring out a way to make them move has been challenging. Researchers have tried using a variety of power sources and propulsion systems for nanotechnology, but these typically lack speed, strength and control.

When you read or hear news stories about the imminent takeover of robots and algorithms that will eliminate jobs for human workers, many times the first examples given are blue-collar jobs like factory workers and taxi drivers. And you may have mentally congratulated yourself because your "professional" job is safe from the threat of being outsourced to computers. But don't feel so safe just yet. More and more, sophisticated big data algorithms and machine learning are proving that jobs previously thought to be the sole purview of humans can be done -- as well or better -- by intelligent machines. Boston Consulting Group has predicted that by 2025 as much as a quarter of jobs currently available will be replaced by either smart software or robots.


Computer gleans chemical insight from lab notebook failures

A lab notebook can be a litany of unsuccessful, unpublished experiments. Don't bin the data just yet -- they could be useful. Chemists in the United States say that they have created a machine-learning algorithm that beats humans at predicting ways to make crystals, by training it on data both from successful experiments and from trials that didn't work. The team terms these failures'dark reactions', because they are either never written down or are recorded only privately in laboratory notebooks. "Failed reactions contain a vast amount of unreported and unextracted information," says Alex Norquist, a materials-synthesis researcher at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, who is part of the team that has reported the work in Nature1.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket puts satellite into orbit, lands on drone platform

There were previously four failed attempts. SpaceX also made a successful landing on a ground-based pad in December.
