UAVIA is bringing military-style drone tech to the rest of us

Now, French company UAVIA is bringing that more advanced approach to the civilian world. With UAVIA's technology, users can operate a drone remotely via the Web. The vehicle is given its instructions via a 4G internet connection that also sends back an HD video feed from the onboard camera. If the signal cuts out the drone can either continue its pre-planned flight or make a safe landing automatically.

Ultradense Word Embeddings by Orthogonal Transformation

Embeddings are generic representations that are useful for many NLP tasks. In this paper, we introduce DENSIFIER, a method that learns an orthogonal transformation of the embedding space that focuses the information relevant for a task in an ultradense subspace of a dimensionality that is smaller by a factor of 100 than the original space. We show that ultradense embeddings generated by DENSIFIER reach state of the art on a lexicon creation task in which words are annotated with three types of lexical information - sentiment, concreteness and frequency. On the SemEval2015 10B sentiment analysis task we show that no information is lost when the ultradense subspace is used, but training is an order of magnitude more efficient due to the compactness of the ultradense space.

Every once in a while an innocuous technical term suddenly enters public discourse with a bizarrely negative connotation. I first noticed the phenomenon some years ago, when I saw a Republican politician accusing Hillary Clinton of "parsing." From the disgust with which he said it, he clearly seemed to feel that parsing was morally equivalent to puppy-drowning. It seemed quite odd to me, since I'd only ever heard the word "parse" used to refer to the computer analysis of sentence structures. The most recent word to suddenly find itself stigmatized by Republicans (yes, it does somehow always seem to be Republican politicians who are involved in this particular kind of linguistic bullshittery) is "encryption."

Earlier it was with sticks and bones, an extension of the human hand; now it is with the help of microchips, transmitters, and processors.
