Online Optimization for Large-Scale Max-Norm Regularization

Max-norm regularizer has been extensively studied in the last decade as it promotes an effective low-rank estimation for the underlying data. However, such max-norm regularized problems are typically formulated and solved in a batch manner, which prevents it from processing big data due to possible memory budget. In this paper, hence, we propose an online algorithm that is scalable to large-scale setting. Particularly, we consider the matrix decomposition problem as an example, although a simple variant of the algorithm and analysis can be adapted to other important problems such as matrix completion. The crucial technique in our implementation is to reformulating the max-norm to an equivalent matrix factorization form, where the factors consist of a (possibly overcomplete) basis component and a coefficients one. In this way, we may maintain the basis component in the memory and optimize over it and the coefficients for each sample alternatively. Since the memory footprint of the basis component is independent of the sample size, our algorithm is appealing when manipulating a large collection of samples. We prove that the sequence of the solutions (i.e., the basis component) produced by our algorithm converges to a stationary point of the expected loss function asymptotically. Numerical study demonstrates encouraging results for the efficacy and robustness of our algorithm compared to the widely used nuclear norm solvers.


U.S. advisers call in drone strike against Somalia jihadis

WASHINGTON – U.S. special operations forces working with African partners called in an airstrike against the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab group in Somalia on Thursday, killing five, the Pentagon said. Jeff Davis said U.S. troops were advising and assisting Ugandan troops from the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) in southern Somalia, west of Mogadishu. The AMISOM troops were raiding an illegal Shabaab roadblock where the jihadis were extorting payments from drivers. "They came under fire from the al-Shabaab militants, and we called in an airstrike in their defense," Davis said. A U.S. defense official said the strike was conducted by drone.

It has been claimed they were the earliest example of stone age art ever seen in Germany, showing a man, a woman and a phallus. The find at the 75m long Mäanderhöhle cave in Bavaria was hailed as a major breakthrough, with hundreds of lines found to form patterns believed to be fertility symbols. An archaeologist studied these lines several years later and published his interpretation of them in a preliminary report, in which he said that the between 14,000 and 16,000 year-old lines were made by humans and probably depicted a phallus and abstract female figures. The find at the 75m long Mäanderhöhle cave in Bavaria was hailed as a major breakthrough, with hundreds of lines found to form patterns believed to be fertility symbols. By measuring chemical signatures, they could determine a person's reaction to specific films on a scene-by-scene basis and the type of scene playing – with comedy and suspense eliciting a particularly pungent response. LingPipe is tool kit for processing text using computational linguistics.

According to its 20 January report, "more than 80% of engineers in India continue to be unemployable". Google just open sourced something called 'Parsey McParseface,' and it could change AI forever

That's why Google is open sourcing its new language parsing model for English, which it calls'Parsey McParseface.' Before you even ask, the name has no meaning. When Google was trying to figure out what to call its language parsing technology, someone suggested Parsey McParseface; it's a bit like Apple's Liam, which has no clever backstory either. 'The Division' Boosts Ubisoft Profit Despite Sales Drop

"Tom Clancy's The Division" was the biggest launch of a new video game property ever, which helped Ubisoft report a profit for its fiscal 2015-2016, the company said Thursday. Ubisoft reported a decrease in sales but a rise in profit for its fiscal 2015-16. Sales were 1.8 billion, down 4.8 percent compared to the previous year, but the 147 million profit was up from the 128 million posted the previous year. "The Division" has amassed 9.5 million registered players since its launch on March 8. Active players are spending around three hours daily on the open world third-person shooter. Bolstering Ubisoft's earnings report was the better-than-expected release "Far Cry Primal," which had the biggest February launch.
