Many years ago, my wife and I went on a trip to Spain. On the way to the airport she realized she had forgotten her Palm Pilot (Remember them?), and she was in despair. Half of my brain is in there! She kept everything in that device: Reservations, addresses, phone numbers. Fast forward to today, where everyone's "half brain" is on their smartphones.

In this talk we'll describe some of the data characteristics which make anomaly detection for real world problems challenging and describe some of the techniques we use at Prelert for anomaly detection. As the complexity of IT systems and the quantity of data people gather increases, proactively managing the health and security of these systems requires increasingly sophisticated monitoring tools. Rule based approaches are either becoming unmanageable or in need of augmentation, and the complexity and scale of the data pose significant challenges.

The popular machine learning projects, in general, are popular because they either provide a wide range of needed services or they were the first (or possibly best) to provide a particular niche service to users. These popular projects include Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Theano, MXNet (maybe?), Weka (formerly), and so on. Depending on the particular ecosystem(s) you work in, and on your machine learning goals, the projects which you consider popular may differ slightly; however, they all share the similarity that they provide services to a large base of users. But there are all sorts of smaller machine learning projects out there that people are building and using: pipelines, wrappers, high-level APIs, cleaners, etc. They provide both niche and flexible services, usually for smaller numbers of users, for all sorts of reasons.


Google developed a processor to power its AI bots

Machine learning, which helps computers do things like understand complex voice commands and improve image search capabilities, can be taxing on traditional hardware. Google should know โ€“ over 100 of its products and features use this technology to run and improve themselves constantly. The company has revealed that over the past few years, it quietly developed its own custom processor for such tasks. The Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is built expressly for running TensorFlow, Google's in-house machine learning system that it open-sourced last year. Some of the biggest names in tech are coming to TNW Conference in Amsterdam this May.

Earlier this year, a small robotic helicopter flying through the Bavarian Alps made more than 100 deliveries between two villages that are within yodeling distance of each other but so far from anything else that they may as well be on Mars. The Paketkopter carried medicine and other small parcels through wind and snow without the slightest problem, even as Amazon and Google and UPS hone their autonomous tech and try not to hit anything. The little drone that could flew from one "Skyport" to another at 45 mph, turning into a half-hour slog by truck into an eight-minute hop. "We purposely chose the test area to pose a new and bigger challenge," says DHL spokesperson Dunja Kuhlmann. The German shipping company started experimenting with drones in 2013, sending small parcels across the Rhine on a quadcopter.

The main objective of this thesis proposal is the exploration of advanced statistical and machine learning techniques for the processing of Big Data in medicine in order to identify novel relevant information for improved understanding of pathophysiological processes. To this aim, the notions of hierarchy and abstraction of deep architectures (i.e., deep learning) will be investigated. The developed techniques will be mainly applied to the research fields in our group which are the neurosciences (study of neurodegeneration and neural development in infants) and cardiology (cardiac function analysis). The project will involve the collaboration with clinical partners. The project will be conducted at the Department of Information & Communication Technologies of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain, within the Simbiosys group (https://portal.upf.edu/web/simbiosys).
