In 2008, through something of a happy accident, a team of zoologists from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany discovered that grazing cows and deer tend to align their bodies with magnetic north. It was an odd thing to notice, particularly because the researchers had been perusing satellite imagery for something else entirely. But that's what happens when you look at something from 400 miles above the Earth's surface--change your perspective, and you'll change what you see. When Golan Levin, a professor of new media art at Carnegie Mellon University, heard about the cow discovery, he found it "to be simultaneously wonderful and very inspiring and totally useless." He was also overcome, he says, by the desire to make similar discoveries.
'Iron Man' robot soldier is Russia's latest terrifying war weapon
Meet Ivan the Terminator - Russia's robotic answer to Iron Man that could be about to change military warfare forever. The terrifying new robot soldier is the latest in the country's list of high-tech weaponry as it competes with the US and China in the artificial intelligence stakes. According to Russian newspaper Komosomolskaya Pravd, the droid is designed "to replace the person in the battle or in emergency areas where there is a risk of explosion, fire, high background radiation, or other conditions harmful to humans. "The development of a special military robot is one of the priorities of military construction in Russia." The Iron Man machines are remotely controlled, but there are fears that they could become completely autonomous in the future.

In a Tuesday interview on Fox Business Network's'Mornings with Maria', former McDonald's CEO Ed Rensi warned that an increased minimum wage would foment massive job loss thanks to the relatively low cost of replacing workers with intelligent machines. "It's cheaper to buy a 35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who's inefficient making 15 an hour bagging French fries – it's nonsense and it's very destructive and it's inflationary and it's going to cause a job loss across this country like you're not going to believe," Rensi said. Even without a 15 per hour law, Rensi said that he thinks that franchising-model businesses are moving toward automation, since they are dependent upon low-skill workers to grow. It's going to happen whether you like it or not. And the more you push this, it's going to happen faster," the former McDonald's chief said.
Mondrian Forests for Large-Scale Regression when Uncertainty Matters

Many real-world regression problems demand a measure of the uncertainty associated with each prediction. Standard decision forests deliver efficient state-of-the-art predictive performance, but high-quality uncertainty estimates are lacking. Gaussian processes (GPs) deliver uncertainty estimates, but scaling GPs to large-scale data sets comes at the cost of approximating the uncertainty estimates. We extend Mondrian forests, first proposed by Lakshminarayanan et al. (2014) for classification problems, to the large-scale non-parametric regression setting. Using a novel hierarchical Gaussian prior that dovetails with the Mondrian forest framework, we obtain principled uncertainty estimates, while still retaining the computational advantages of decision forests. Through a combination of illustrative examples, real-world large-scale datasets, and Bayesian optimization benchmarks, we demonstrate that Mondrian forests outperform approximate GPs on large-scale regression tasks and deliver better-calibrated uncertainty assessments than decision-forest-based methods.
Learning may need only a few bits of synaptic precision

Learning in neural networks poses peculiar challenges when using discretized rather then continuous synaptic states. The choice of discrete synapses is motivated by biological reasoning and experiments, and possibly by hardware implementation considerations as well. In this paper we extend a previous large deviations analysis which unveiled the existence of peculiar dense regions in the space of synaptic states which accounts for the possibility of learning efficiently in networks with binary synapses. We extend the analysis to synapses with multiple states and generally more plausible biological features. The results clearly indicate that the overall qualitative picture is unchanged with respect to the binary case, and very robust to variation of the details of the model. We also provide quantitative results which suggest that the advantages of increasing the synaptic precision (i.e.~the number of internal synaptic states) rapidly vanish after the first few bits, and therefore that, for practical applications, only few bits may be needed for near-optimal performance, consistently with recent biological findings. Finally, we demonstrate how the theoretical analysis can be exploited to design efficient algorithmic search strategies.
Deep learning applied to drug discovery and repurposing

Deep learning, frequently referred to as artificial intelligence, a branch of machine learning utilizing multiple layers of neurons to model high-level abstractions in data, has outperformed humans in tasks including image, text and voice recognition, autonomous driving and others, and is now being applied to drug discovery and biomarker development. In a study published in Molecular Pharmaceutics, a prestigious journal published by the American Chemical Society, scientists from Insilico Medicine in collaboration with Datalytic Solutions and Mind Research Network trained deep neural networks to predict the therapeutic use of large number of multiple drugs using gene expression data obtained from high-throughput experiments on human cell lines. Deep neural networks outperformed other machine learning techniques and did not result in significant drop in performance as the number of classes increased. When the networks got confused and guessed the therapeutic use of the drugs incorrectly, the drugs often had dual use, indicating the possibility of using DNNs for drug repurposing.

On the Sunday, I started hearing the high pitched noise again in my ear I had not heard it for a few days, since Magnus arrived, and all of a sudden it was back along with the voice to skull.

This is a torch implementation of the paper A Neural Algorithm of Artistic Style by Leon A. Gatys, Alexander S. Ecker, and Matthias Bethge. The paper presents an algorithm for combining the content of one image with the style of another image using convolutional neural networks. Applying the style of different images to the same content image gives interesting results. The algorithm allows the user to trade-off the relative weight of the style and content reconstruction terms, as shown in this example where we port the style of Picasso's 1907 self-portrait onto Brad Pitt: By resizing the style image before extracting style features, we can control the types of artistic features that are transfered from the style image; you can control this behavior with the -style_scale flag. How 'Warcraft' Could Open Up Another Niche In China's Box Office
Based on presale numbers, "Warcraft" is one of China's most anticipated films of all-time. But more importantly, it could give Hollywood another avenue to capitalize on a nearly 7 billion movie market that's growing at nearly 50 percent a year -- but has a select few preferences. Industry analyst Jonathan Papish of China Film Insider noted Universal Pictures' "Warcraft," based on the video game series from Activision Blizzard has reeled in 2 million in ticket presales for its midnight premiere 12 days before it happens, which is already the sixth-best ever. That doesn't necessarily mean "Warcraft" will be a long-tail hit in China like "Furious 7" or "Zootopia." After all, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" also had strong China presales numbers but ended up being a major disappointment, dropping 80 percent in its second weekend amid reports of bored crowds playing on their phones.
