Analyzing Volleyball Match Data from the 2014 World Championships Using Machine Learning Techniques

This paper proposes a relational learning based approach for discovering strategies in volleyball matches based on optical tracking data. In contrast to most existing methods, our approach permits discovering patterns that account for both spatial (that is, partial configurations of the players on the court) and temporal (that is, the order of events and positions) aspects of the game. We analyze both the men's and women's final match from the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championships, and are able to identify several interesting and relevant strategies from the matches.

A recent report shows that there are almost no active users left on Renren, as advertising accounts keep pushing uninteresting contents and the system keeps recommending other people's posts that were so "yesterday". Some have jokingly said this must be what will happen to our world after it is taken by AI.

Recently I visited the Innorobo show in Paris, a gathering of robot companies from around the world, which brought together industrial robots, service robots, toy robots, family robots, and many other robot types, all under one roof. One of the key highlights was SoftBank Robotics launching Pepper Partners Europe, inviting developers and companies in Europe to build applications for SoftBank's flagship robot, Pepper. This initiative is part of SoftBank's expansion of Pepper outside Japan, where more than 3,000 Pepper robots have already been deployed at over 1,000 companies. SoftBank Robotics, largely composed of the French robotics pioneer Aldebaran (of which Softbank owns 95%), has more than 500 employees globally, with the majority based in Paris at the Aldebaran facility. SoftBank has big ambitions for Pepper, and with more than 20,000 Pepper robots deployed worldwide in both consumer and enterprise environments, SoftBank is easily the leading player in this space.


Apple is working on an AI system that wipes the floor with Google and everyone else

Apple now has the tech in place to give its digital assistant a big boost thanks to a UK-based company called VocalIQ it bought last year. In fact, it was so impressive that Apple bought VocalIQ before the company could finish and release its smartphone app. After the acquisition, Apple kept most of the VocalIQ team and let them work out of their Cambridge office and integrate the product into Siri. Before Apple bought the company, VocalIQ tested its product against Siri, Google Now, and Cortana, and the results were impressive. Users asked each AI questions using normal language, not the robotic commands you're used to using with digital assistants.

Inc.'s 11th annual 30 Under 30 list features the young founders taking on some of the world's biggest challenges. In 2013, a high-frequency trader named Michael Coscia was arrested in New Jersey for an activity called "spoofing"--essentially manipulating the market by flooding trading systems with future orders he had no intention of completing. He was fined 6 million--with the possibility of jail time. It was the first such prosecution under a new set of financial regulations from the 2010 banking reform law called the Dodd-Frank Act. That was an aha! moment for David Widerhorn, 28, and it became his reason for founding Neurensic.

I recently caught up with Fernando Lucini, Chief Technology Officer, Big Data Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, to discuss the future of machine learning at HPE Big Data. HPE IDOL is the industry's leading augmented intelligence software for human information and the Haven OnDemand platform powers a new generation of applications with machine learning APIs and Services. He has a deep technical background, and has been critical in the launch of many products throughout his career, spanning enterprise search, rich media analytics, and compliance, among many others. Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises everything from self-driving cars to self-writing newspapers, but AI may be missing its greatest opportunity in healthcare, where AI-driven "conversational interfaces" hold untapped potential to influence the health and wellbeing of billions of people. Fueled by the massive popularity of messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, "conversational UI" is providing an emerging generation of chat-based digital services that may be the next thing in consumer technology. Instead of manipulating a graphical interface, users have a conversation with a chat-bot: software that is able to understand and respond to natural language inputs. The pace of technical advances combined with a shift in cultural norms is making AI conversations feel normal for increasing numbers of people. The idea of a "computer you can talk to" has captured the imagination of the computer science community, and the general public, for decades.


United Nations CITO: Artificial intelligence will be humanity's final innovation - TechRepublic

Artificial intelligence, said United Nations chief information technology officer Atefeh Riazi, might be the last innovation humans create. "The next innovations," said the cabinet-level diplomat during a recent interview at her office at UN headquarters in New York, "will come through artificial intelligence." From then on, said Riazi, "it will be the AI innovating. We need to think about our role as technologists and we need to think about the ramifications--positive and negative--and we need to transform ourselves as innovators." Appointed by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as CITO and Assistant Secretary-General of the Office of Information and Communications Technology in 2013, Riazi is also an innovator in her own right in the global security community. Riazi was born in Iran, and is a veteran of the information technology industry. She has a degree in electrical engineering from Stony Brook University in New York, spent over 20 years working in IT roles in the public and private sectors, and was the New York City Housing Authority's Chief Information Officer from 2009 to 2013. She has also served as the executive director of CIOs Without Borders, a non-profit organization dedicated to using technology for the good of society--especially to support healthcare projects in the developing world.


Mathematicians Bridge the Divide Between Infinity and the Physical World

Even though they questioned the value and consistency of infinitistic logic, Hilbert and his contemporaries did not wish to give up such abstractions--power tools of mathematical reasoning that in 1928 would enable the British philosopher and mathematician Frank Ramsey to chop up and color infinite sets at will. "No one shall expel us from the paradise which Cantor has created for us," Hilbert said in a 1925 lecture. He hoped to stay in Cantor's paradise and obtain proof that it stood on stable logical ground. Hilbert tasked mathematicians with proving that set theory and all of infinitistic mathematics is finitistically reducible, and therefore trustworthy. "We must know; we will know!" he said in a 1930 address in Königsberg--words later etched on his tomb.
