An Oxford University professor said computers will soon be eligible to the same civil rights humans currently have. The statement was made in observation to advancements in computing, with artificial intelligence already having a semblance to the human consciousness. Marcus du Sautoy, a professor at Oxford and author of "What We Cannot Know, "asserts that it is now possible to measure consciousness. In a Telegraph report, he also said the future of "living" technology is within sight. The advancements could lead to devices developing their own consciousness; this qualifies technology to have "human rights."

Historians discovered a code machine used by Adolf Hitler to swap top secret messages with his generals when they saw it advertised on eBay for 9.50. Volunteers from the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park tracked down the extremely rare Lorenz keyboard after seeing it on the online bidding site. It was being advertised as a telegram machine and the historians found that it had been left in a shed in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, with'rubbish all over it'. Historians discovered a code machine used by Adolf Hitler to swap top secret messages with his generals when they noticed it was being sold on eBay. Three Australian startups have been recognised as some of the most disruptive companies in the world with the potential to "influence, change or create new global markets". Twice a year, leading entrepreneurs, investors and experts from the likes of Microsoft Ventures, Silicon Valley Bank, Sky News and IBM curate the Disrupt 100 list, which is published by UK-based Tallt Ventures. Out of more than one million global startups and corporate ventures, Sydney's Eora 3D, Adelaide's Humanihut and Queensland's Go One made the cut. With Asia expected to represent a growing number of listings in the future, Disrupt 100 has highlighted Eora 3D among the many startups in the region leading the way. It's a proud moment for Eora 3D co-founder Rich Boers who says he can't believe his startup has been listed ahead of companies like IBM Watson, a health platform using artificial intelligence to generate insights on unstructured data.
Researchers are Developing Robots that Feel Pain
Science fiction is now science fact? Researchers narrow the gap between man and machine, developing a robot that can sense and react to pain. The technology is expected to improve interaction between machines and humans, especially in the industries. Two researchers at the Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany presented the project at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Stockholm, Sweden. One of the goals of the research was to provide machines with the ability to avoid damage to internal and external parts.
Apple's New AI System Will Reportedly 'Wipe the Floor' With All Competitors
According to a new report from Business Insider, Apple is working on a new artificial intelligence system that will "wipe the floor" with all of its competitors. The major improvement to Siri is said to come from the company's acquisition of VocalIQ, a UK-based start-up that created artificial-intelligence software that helps computers and people speak to each other in a more natural dialogue. Before getting acquired, VocalIQ tested their technology against Siri, Google Now, and Cortana. With a question like "Find a nearby Chinese restaurant with open parking and WiFi that's kid-friendly" VocalIQ had a success rate over 90%. Google Now, Siri, and Cortana were only successful about 20% of the time.

Query and Predicate Emptiness in Ontology-Based Data Access

In ontology-based data access (OBDA), database querying is enriched with an ontology that provides domain knowledge and additional vocabulary for query formulation. We identify query emptiness and predicate emptiness as two central reasoning services in this context. Query emptiness asks whether a given query has an empty answer over all databases formulated in a given vocabulary. Predicate emptiness is defined analogously, but quantifies universally over all queries that contain a given predicate. In this paper, we determine the computational complexity of query emptiness and predicate emptiness in the EL, DL-Lite, and ALC-families of description logics, investigate the connection to ontology modules, and perform a practical case study to evaluate the new reasoning services.
