Inferring Sparsity: Compressed Sensing using Generalized Restricted Boltzmann Machines

In this work, we consider compressed sensing reconstruction from $M$ measurements of $K$-sparse structured signals which do not possess a writable correlation model. Assuming that a generative statistical model, such as a Boltzmann machine, can be trained in an unsupervised manner on example signals, we demonstrate how this signal model can be used within a Bayesian framework of signal reconstruction. By deriving a message-passing inference for general distribution restricted Boltzmann machines, we are able to integrate these inferred signal models into approximate message passing for compressed sensing reconstruction. Finally, we show for the MNIST dataset that this approach can be very effective, even for $M < K$.

As much as we tend to cringe when referring to the term' hipster culture' – we think there's some practical value to scoring suburbs on their (dare I say it) trendiness. At the end of the day, living somewhere that has character and access to good food and coffee trumps the alternative. Microburbs, an online property tool that launched last year, uses an algorithm to give suburbs – and even smaller pockets of land within them (thus the'micro') – a rating based on their cultural vibe. According to the algorithm, Sydney has the most'hipster' suburbs with Darlinghurst rating 9.9/10 and Surry Hills 9.9/10. Meanwhile, Melbourne hosts 21 suburbs with a score above 9, while Sydney has 20. So judging by this, it's still a little unclear which city comes up on top.


Google Sets Sights on NHS with AI-driven Apps - Mobile Marketing

The NHS could be applying machine learning-style processing to its patient, doctor and hospital data in an effort to improve efficiency within five years if plans by Google/DeepMind to push into the healthcare sector are approved. According to New Scientist, which has obtained a Memorandum of Understanding drawn up between DeepMind and the Royal Free NHS Trust in London, the two organisations are attempting to form a "broad ranging, mutually beneficial partnership, engaging in high levels of collaborative activity and maximising the potential to work on genuinely innovative and transformative projects." Among the areas the project aims to touch on are making improvements in clinical outcomes and patient safety, and reducing costs throughout the organisation. The memo also sets out a long list of "areas of mutual interest" where the two organisations could work together over the next five years, including bed and demand management software, financial control products, private messaging and task management for junior doctors, and even real-time health prediction. In fact, health prediction has formed the basis of the first project between the two partners, with Google/DeepMind creating an app called Streams that aims to study healthcare data to try to identify patients at risk of deterioration, readmission or even death.

People have a weird obsession with games likes Chess and Go. Achievement in them has long been seen as a marker of human intellect, and yet they're among the least human test you could devise; putting players in simplified situations where everything is known, every possible course of action is laid out for them, and the test is one of concentration and logic. We pass far greater tests daily, when we recognise a face in a crowd, when we dynamically balance in motion, when we predict the response our words and expressions will have on another sentient being, or when we do all of the above, effortlessly, at the same time. We don't think of these as challenging because they're so innately human, while playing Chess or Go seems far more impressive precisely because they're more rigid and computational in nature. There's an irony in making a board game one of the'grand challenges' of AI, and it surprises me that more people don't see it.

'Conjuring 2' wins the weekend, but all eyes are on China box office returns for 'Warcraft'

Though Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema's '"The Conjuring 2" ghosted all of its competition at the weekend box office, all eyes are on the performance of Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures' "Warcraft." Though the video game adaptation grossed only a modest sum in the U.S and Canada, given its hefty production budget, the picture's international numbers wildly make up for it. "Warcraft" grossed an estimated 24.4 million in ticket sales in the U.S., coming in just shy of analyst projections of 25 million and taking the second place spot. The film has a 160 million price tag attached to it, proving that film adaptations of massively popular video games (the multiplayer strategy game "World of Warcraft" is produced by Irvine-headquartered publisher Blizzard Entertainment) are still a tough sell in the U.S. Reviews have been decidedly negative for the picture. As of Sunday, only 27% of Rotten Tomatoes critics favored it, though up from the paltry 16% positive rating the film had just days before its release.

Artificial (General) Intelligent robots will be cleverer than us, able to do anything we can do, better, and faster, for twenty four hours a day, with no time off demanded either, except perhaps for an occasional self-service. Most of the jobs only humans could do before will be gone, and this situation will soon seriously begin to happen, well before the end of the next decade.

Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. A few weeks ago, I attended the Seven Pines Symposium on Fundamental Problems in Physics outside Minneapolis, where I had the honor of participating in a panel discussion with Sir Roger Penrose. The way it worked was, Penrose spoke for a half hour about his ideas about consciousness (Gödel, quantum gravity, microtubules, uncomputability, you know the drill), then I delivered a half-hour "response," and then there was an hour of questions and discussion from the floor. Below, I'm sharing the prepared notes for my talk, as well as some very brief recollections about the discussion afterward. I unfortunately don't have the text or transparencies for Penrose's talk available to me, but--with one exception, which I touch on in my own talk--his talk very much followed the outlines of his famous books, The Emperor's New Mind and Shadows of the Mind. Admittedly, for regular readers of this blog, not much in my own talk will be new either. Apart from a few new wisecracks, almost all of the material (including the replies to Penrose) is contained in The Ghost in the Quantum Turing Machine, Could A Quantum Computer Have Subjective Experience? (my talk at IBM T. J. Watson), and Quantum Computing Since Democritus chapters 4 and 11. See also my recent answer on Quora to "What's your take on John Searle's Chinese room argument"? Still, I thought it might be of interest to some readers how I organized this material for the specific, unenviable task of debating the guy who proved that our universe contains spacetime singularities. The Seven Pines Symposium was the first time I had extended conversations with Penrose (I'd talked to him only briefly before, at the Perimeter Institute). At age 84, Penrose's sight is failing him; he eagerly demonstrated the complicated optical equipment he was recently issued by Britain's National Health Service. But his mind remains … well, may we all aspire to be a milliPenrose or even a nanoPenrose when we're 84 years old.
