Google's Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare is Making Strides in London
Google's DeepMind Health is a project that utilizes artificial intelligence to learn from data and make the healthcare process efficient. Included in the agreement are plans for developing hospital support systems such as bed and demand management software, financial control products, and private messaging and task management for junior doctors. Another key area in the partnership is real-time health prediction: the use of health care data to identify the risk of patient deterioration, death, and/or readmission. The agreement intends to "maximize the benefit of bringing together two parties who are centers of excellence in their respective fields, including improvements in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient and staff experience, as well as cost reductions."
Will machines eventually take on every job?
It's a booming time to be a truck driver. According to data NPR compiled from the US Census Bureau, truck driving is currently the most popular job in 29 states. It's not that truck driving is a particularly sought after career path, however. Rather, it is simply one that is available and pays decently. Unlike a plethora of other jobs that have declined in recent years, truck driving has remained immune to the forces that have elbowed out different lines of work.
AI fools humans with fake sound effects
When MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab researchers showed videos of a drumstick hitting and brushing through various objects, subjects were fooled into believing that the sounds they heard actually came from the objects and materials on screen. Instead, a computer programmed to analyze the video and apply the correct sounds from its own library of samples chose the audio clips for all the videos. And the subjects were none the wiser. The team's work is described in a new paper released Monday and being presented next week at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference in Las Vegas. To be clear, there really isn't any such thing as an Auditory Turing test.
What's Next for Artificial Intelligence
The traditional definition of artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to execute tasks and solve problems in ways normally attributed to humans. Some tasks that we consider simple--recognizing an object in a photo, driving a car--are incredibly complex for AI. Machines can surpass us when it comes to things like playing chess, but those machines are limited by the manual nature of their programming; a 30 gadget can beat us at a board game, but it can't do--or learn to do--anything else. This is where machine learning comes in. Show millions of cat photos to a machine, and it will hone its algorithms to improve at recognizing pictures of cats.
US Air Force plans to pluck dangerous drones out of the skies
How do you bring a bad drone down? New kinds of drones that can fly autonomously can't be stopped with traditional techniques, the US Air Force has warned. It's put out a call for ideas to yank drones right out of the sky. Millions of drones are sold worldwide each year. Most are flown for fun, but a few have been put to criminal use: carrying cameras to bedroom windows, flying into secure airspace over nuclear power stations, and smuggling contraband into prisons.
Robot built to break one of I, Robot's laws of robotics
A robot which has the capacity to decide it will inflict pain on humans has been invented - breaking one of the standard rules for artificial intelligence. From Will Smith movie I, Robot, one of the laws of robotics is commonly considered to be that it cannot injure humans. But scientists and artist Alexander Reben has invented "The First Law", a robot named for the very rule it breaks. The basic robot is programmed to be capable of pricking a human's finger. However, as Mr Reben is intending to provoke discussion on AI, The First Law will not'decide' to inflict pain every time.
Apple WWDC: Key apps see upgrades, redesigns and open to developers
This includes the future of messaging, photos, maps, and more. SAN FRANCISCO โ Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference took place in San Francisco Monday morning, where the company introduced significant upgrades to iOS and its other operating systems, including redesigns to Apple Music and Messages. Apple also opened three key features โ Siri, Maps and Messages โ to third party developers and created the Home app to make for easier control of HomeKit using an iPhone, iPad or Watch. Statistically, self-driving cars are about to kill someone. What happens next?
That's the number of miles, on average, that it takes a human driver to kill someone in the United States. It's also the number of miles Tesla's semi-autonomous'Autopilot' feature had racked up by May this year. Assuming Autopilot is rolled out to Tesla's mass-market Model 3 in 2017, that number will rapidly climb into the billions. Mercedes are deploying similar systems in their new E-class, while Google's fully driverless cars have racked up another 1.6 million miles and counting . As the miles grow, the odds shrink.
France creates a meteor-tracking camera network
It's difficult to track where meteors go when showers are both relatively common and rain down loads of space rocks. However, France thinks it has the answer. It recently launched FRIPON, a meteor detection network. The system uses a country-wide camera system (currently 68, scaling up to 100) to track where meteors fly -- if two or more cameras spot something, scientists get an alert. Eventually, that camera data will help narrow down likely impact areas (as small as 1 kilometer, or 0.6 miles) and send thousands of volunteers out to recover meteorites.
Siri wins this round: How Apple's digital assistant made Cortana look bad at WWDC
Siri upstaged Cortana Monday morning, in a digital assistant battle that's just starting to heat up. Microsoft may have positioned Cortana as the future of digital assistants with its surprise LinkedIn purchase, but mere hours later, Apple's Siri showed off a few productivity tricks of her own that Microsoft is going to have trouble matching. As part of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple executives showed off macOS Sierra, the next iteration of Apple's Mac operating system. An integrated Siri wil be one of its star features. "It's the same Siri on the Mac that we know and love, but now it can do so much more,' said Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, in describing the new Siri.
