Long ago I lived in Santa Cruz, California. Almost every morning I would throw on a wet suit, grab my surfboard out of the garage, and head to the rocky cliffs just a few blocks from my house. I would descend a well-worn path to the ocean below, paddle out to the break, and spend hours surrounded by kelp beds and barking sea lions, catching waves, feeling exhilarated, and floating on my board, a world away from the troubles on land. I have a family now and have lived for years in the generally wave-less realms of New York City. But a few months ago I suddenly felt that old hunger again. I wanted to race out to the garage and grab a board.
First successful ship-to-shore drone delivery takes place in New Jersey
A drone successfully delivered medical supplies to the New Jersey coastline straight from the deck of a ship, marking the first ship-to-shore delivery in the US. The flight was designed to test whether drones could be used to carry human medical supplies to and from areas that cannot be access during major storms, earthquakes or other disasters. The test was run by disaster preparedness non-profit Field Innovation Team. Drone-firm Flirtey, which managed the first land-based drone delivery of medical supplies to a rural health clinic in July 2015, flew medical samples to Camp May in partnership with Dr Timothy Amukele, assistant professor of pathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. While drones have already been muted as one way to deliver goods, such as Amazon's Air Prime drones, Amukele said that biological samples "are not like a shoe or a book, they are pretty fragile items".
Jason Rohrer and the Art of the Video Game
On a recent Tuesday evening, the video-game creator Jason Rohrer was visiting Manhattan from Davis, California. His work is the subject of "The Game Worlds of Jason Rohrer," the first full-scale museum show devoted to the video games of a single artist, at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College; his game Passage, from 2007, is in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art. That night, he was the star of an event at NeueHouse, the vast private-membership work space "for the ambitious and the curious" on Twenty-fifth Street, in which he discussed video games and art in front of an eager crowd. NeueHouse has the atmosphere of a tech incubator crossed with a popular restaurant--five stories of elegant young professionals drinking wine and espresso, sitting in front of laptops instead of plates, patrons and servers alike zipping around in a mood of anxious exhilaration. Before the event, Rohrer showed me his games on his laptop. "When I first walked in, I thought it was a club," Rohrer told me.
How Deep Learning Could Be The Next Step In Cancer Detection
Samsung Medison's new ultrasound system quickly screens for abnormalities. Artificial intelligence may be the new face of medical diagnostics. For the first time, a flavor of A.I. called deep learning is being implemented in new ultrasound imaging equipment to aid in breast exams and help patients avoid unnecessary biopsies. A new feature in Samsung Medison's ultrasound system uses a deep-learning algorithm to make recommendations about whether a breast abnormality is benign or cancerous. The "S-Detect for Breast" feature is now included in an upgrade to the company's RS80A ultrasound system and is commercially available in parts of Europe, the Middle East and Korea and is pending FDA approval in the U.S., according to PR manager Doug Kim.
AI computers could soon be used to diagnose cancer
Computers could soon be helping to diagnose cancer in patients with the help of artificial intelligence that has been trained to spots the early signs of the disease. An AI machine capable of accurately diagnosing breast cancer 92 per cent of the time has been developed by researchers. While it is still not quite as good as human specialists – who are correct 96 per cent of the time – it suggests that AI could soon be used to speed up and improve cancer screening. Scientists have used machine learning to create an artificial intelligence system capable of diagnosing breast cancer from lymph node biopsies with 92 per cent accuracy (cancer cells in a lymph node pictured). When combined with a human pathologist this accuracy increased to 99.5 per cent The system was developed by computer scientists at Harvard Medical School gave a machine learning algorithm slides of lymph nodes from breast cancer patients.

After the robot revolution, what will be left for our children to do?
Jobs computers can't do have one thing in common – attentive, human qualities. According to Oxford university economists Dr Carl Frey and Dr Michael Osborne, 40% of all jobs are at risk of being lost to computers in the next two decades. Though much has been said about the jobs that will be lost, Frey points out that we don't know what type of new work automation will create. We have already seen a shift away from agriculture and manufacturing jobs; now as more jobs become automated in what Frey terms the "computer recession", we will see the disappearance of repetitive, low-skilled work, he says. "And we don't know specifically what new sectors will create jobs in the next decade or two."

After great promise in the 1960s that machines would soon think like humans, progress stalled for decades. Only in the past 10 years or so has research picked up, and now there are several popular products on the market that do a decent job of at least recognizing spoken speech. For Björn Schuller, full professor and head of the chair of Complex and Intelligent Systems at the University of Passau, Germany, who grew up watching Knight Rider--a television show about a car that could talk--this is the fulfillment of a childhood fantasy. Schuller is a World Economic Forum Young Scientist who will speak at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin, China, from June 26 to 28.He recently spoke about the possibility of machines soon tuning in to human language quirks, behavior and emotion. How did you get interested in machine intelligence and speech recognition?
