Better, faster, more productive... these used to be words to describe what we wanted from our internet broadband connection. Now they describe what we expect not only from all our products and services but also from each other. The expectations that we have from the world and the world has from us are dynamic, ever-changing and transforming at speed. AI is all around us. Complicated and repetitive tasks are better performed by computer algorithms and mechanisms than by the human mind.

In the future, a new generation of autonomous robots is set to complete tasks autonomously, even if something unforeseeable happens. With the support of the Austrian Science Fund FWF, information technology experts in Graz are working to advance the development of artificial intelligence and equip robots with common sense. Something that children learn through play and that adults are able to do on the basis of past experience, such as responding to unexpected situations, remains one of the great challenges in robotics. Autonomous systems are expected to complete tasks given to them without external input. The deployment of such intelligent robots would be particularly important in critical situations – such as environmental disasters or industrial accidents.

Then today we see the political aspirations of the elite want to make more hay [i..e'money']. An area of concern for A.I. here is that the ability to transfer human thought, mind, and the essence of a human being into a Robot so the powers that be; individuals may live forever. Their body may die but who they will live on in a machine.

When American novelist David Foster Wallace delivered the commencement address at Kenyon College in 2005, he urged the graduating class to "exercise some control over how and what you think." If you don't at least try to regulate your thoughts and behaviors, Wallace cautioned, you will go through life "dead, unconscious, a slave to your head." Wallace himself long suffered with unwanted negative thoughts and crippling self-doubt--and took his own life three years after that speech. But can our mind become a "terrible master," as Wallace described? Kessler, the former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has considered that question for the past two decades, studying how substances such as food, alcohol and tobacco can hijack our brain chemistry and compel us to act against our own best intentions--bingeing on brownies, booze or cigarettes.
Human vs Machine: It's Go Time
In a match last October, the AlphaGo program developed by Google's "DeepMind" subsidiary beat, 5 games to 0, the French professional player Fan Hui,1 who is ranked 2 dan (on the professional scale from 1 dan to 9 dan) and is today Europe's best player. The story was related by the journal Nature.2 This was the first time that a computer beats a professional player. But in the world of artificial intelligence, the progress demonstrated by the AlphaGo victory wasn't expected for another ten years or so. The moment of truth, however, will take place between March 9-15 in Seoul, where AlphaGo will face the South Korean Lee Se-dol, who is 9 dan, and is considered the best player in the world as well as a Go living legend. This new game, which will be broadcast live on the Web, comes with a 1,000,000 prize for the human champion if he wins.
What's Next for Artificial Intelligence
The traditional definition of artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to execute tasks and solve problems in ways normally attributed to humans. Some tasks that we consider simple--recognizing an object in a photo, driving a car--are incredibly complex for AI. Machines can surpass us when it comes to things like playing chess, but those machines are limited by the manual nature of their programming; a 30 gadget can beat us at a board game, but it can't do--or learn to do--anything else. This is where machine learning comes in. Show millions of cat photos to a machine, and it will hone its algorithms to improve at recognizing pictures of cats.
Astronomers create foul perfume to mimic the unique smell of Rosetta's comet
If you have ever wondered what space smells like, a new fragrance may be your best chance yet to find out. Perfumers have created a scent to mimic the smell of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko – the rubber duck-shaped comet which was the target of the Rosetta mission. It was commissioned by scientists on the Rosetta team to interpret the variety of smelly chemical compounds the mission found in the comet's micro-atmosphere, with hints of cat wee, rotten eggs and bitter almonds. The Rosetta Orbiter Sensor for Ion and Neutral Analysis got its first taste of 67P in 2014, when its sensors passed through the comet's trailing atmosphere.
