So the UK has just given itself a national headache. Whether you think the Brexit was the right decision or a dangerous and unmitigated screw-up (as I do), the consequences of the referendum will be non-trivial and take years to complete. But the mechanics of the UK exiting the European Union aside, the question of how people now feel about the Brexit is interesting. Are they awash in jubilation or has buyer's remorse set in?

As a child, growing up with the 1970's and 80's episodes of the BBC TV series, the only way I could be convinced to watch the Saturday tea-time showings of Dr Who was by robbing the family dog of its worn old blanket and sitting with it over my head, peering at the TV (with its'remote' control attached to the TV unit on a cable) through a chewed hole. It was my way of convincing my 8-year old myself that I was safe and that it wasn't all real. And yet, even stripping away the blanket and upgrading the TV (and remote control) tech quite a bit, and replacing the Daleks with for example, Arnie's Terminator, the Matrix's Machines, Ex Machina's Ava (or even the comedy Fembots in Austin Powers), man's age-old fear of the machine and relentless need to fight, overpower and destroy it hasn't really changed that much โ€ฆ even if some of the methods have. From the industrial revolution onwards, our relationship with machines and technology of any variety has always been'love/hate'. Even the fact that films like Wall-E, Big Hero and the Iron Giant, and characters like The Hitchhiker's' bulbous Marvin and Star Wars' R2-D2, C-3PO and more recently, BB-9, have such a fond film-following stems in part from our need to'humanise' robots and make them less scary.

Cozmo the mini robot could be the toy that takes the world by storm this Christmas. The little droid uses artificial intelligence to learn tricks and interact with people. Some are comparing the toy to R2-D2 from Star Wars and it is also attracting millions in investment for technology entrepreneurs. Silicon Valley start-up Anki has been backed by JP Morgan and venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz and Index Ventures for Cozmo (pictured). The most recent funding round takes Anki's total investment to 136.5million.

YOU heard it here first. When it comes to navigating information, headphones may be about to put screens in the shade. A handful of start-ups are creating devices which promise to transform not only how you hear the world, but also the way you interface with the gadgets in your life. Here One, launched this week by New York firm Doppler Labs, is one example. Looking like a pair of outsized earplugs, it samples the audio environment and plays back an augmented version. Using a smartphone, users can tweak the levels of individual sounds โ€“ adjusting the bass and treble at a concert, for example โ€“ or silence intrusive noises such as traffic and wailing infants.


European lawmakers want robots to pay taxes

If robots are going to steal human jobs and otherwise disrupt society, they should at the very least pay taxes. That's the takeaway from a draft report on robotics produced by the European Parliament, which warns that artificial intelligence and increased automation present legal and ethical challenges that could have dire consequences. "Within the space of a few decades [artificial intelligence] could surpass human intellectual capacity in a manner which, if not prepared for, could pose a challenge to humanity's capacity to control its own creation and ... the survival of the species," the draft states. The report offers a series of recommendations to prepare Europe for this advanced breed of robot, which it says now "seem poised to unleash a new industrial revolution." The proposal suggests that robots should have to register with authorities, and says laws should be written to hold machines liable for damage they cause, such as loss of jobs. Contact between humans and robots should be regulated, with a special emphasis "given to human safety, privacy, integrity, dignity and autonomy."

Artificial Brains - The quest to build sentient machines

Artificial brains are man-made machines that are just as intelligent, creative, and self-aware as humans. No such machine has yet been built, but it is only a matter of time. This website tracks the latest scientific and technological progress. SyNAPSE is a DARPA-funded program to develop neuromorphic microprocessor systems that match the intelligence, physical size, and low power consumption of animal brains. Their approach is to first test neural networks in simulation on a supercomputer.


Google Fellow Talks Neural Nets, Deep Learning EE Times

SAN FRANCISCO--We are already living with deep learning and large-scale neural networks, as evidenced by the growing number of applications that rely on computer vision, language understanding, and robotics. What we now want most from machine learning, said Google Senior Fellow Jeff Dean to the audience at SIGMOD 2016 keynote today (Tuesday, June 28), is --understanding." In a keynote talk, Dean outlined the history of machine learning (ML) and neural networks and various ways to program models to take advantage of raw data coming through in the form of images or audio. He also detailed how ML has taken shape at Google, which recently announced that it will open a machine learning center in Europe. The company developed its own accelerator chips for artificial intelligence it calls tensor processing units (TPUs) after the open source TensorFlow algorithms it released last year.
