Dating site murderer Miles Donnelly jailed for life

A man who murdered a single mother he met on a dating website has been jailed for life. Miles Donnelly admitted strangling Usha Patel, 44, at the home she shared with her five-year-old son in Cricklewood, north-west London in October 2015. The 35-year-old, from Paddington, then fled to a west London house where he attacked another woman when she refused his advances. At the Old Bailey he was told he would serve a minimum of 23 years. The court heard he and Ms Patel had met on the dating site seven months before she invited him back to her home on 7 October.

For those suffering depression, PTSD, or other mental health challenges, a breakdown can be a slow burn, developing over days or weeks in between doctor visits. Delay in treatment can have lasting consequences. "Very likely, every single episode of depression or mania is going to damage your brain a little more," says Thilo Deckersbach, a Harvard psychology professor who practices at Massachusetts General Hospital. The hospital's online MoodNetwork recruits patients with major depression and bipolar disorder for clinical studies, including a new one with the Boston-based artificial intelligence company Cogito. They are testing the ability of a mobile app called "Companion" to flag early signs of trouble by monitoring activities like patients' movement, calling and texting behavior, and the way they speak.

When most people look at a piece of paper, they see an unremarkable sheet of flat white material. When Polly Verity looks at piece of paper, she sees potential. Verity specializes in transforming single sheets of paper into surprising three-dimensional tessellations, a tradition of paper-folding called curved-crease origami sculpture with origins in Germany's seminal Bauhaus school of art and design. It was at the Bauhaus in the 1920s that famed artist and designer Josef Albers taught a preliminary course in "paper study." The course was designed to help students approach the humble material with its inherent limitations--its stiffness, its thinness--in mind, and to allow these limitations to inform their creativity.

Machine learning is quickly becoming an indispensable tool for many large companies. Everyone has, for sure, heard about Google's AI algorithm beating the World Champion in Go, as well as technologies like RankBrain, but machine learning does not have to be a mystical subject relegated to the domain of math researchers. There are many approachable libraries and technologies that show promise of being very useful to any industry that has data to play with. Machine learning also has the ability to turn traditional website marketing and SEO on its head. Late last year, my colleagues and I (rather naively) began an experiment in which we threw several popular machine learning algorithms at the task of predicting ranking in Google. We ended up with an assembly that achieved 41 percent true positive and 41 percent true negative on our data set.


Google uses DeepMind AI to cut data center energy bills

The amount of energy consumed by big data centers has always been a headache for tech companies. Keeping the servers cool as they crunch numbers is such a challenge that Facebook even built one of its facilities on the edge of the Arctic Circle. Well, Google has a different solution to this problem: putting its DeepMind artificial intelligence unit in charge and using AI to manage power usage in parts of its data centers. A 40 percent reduction in the amount of electricity needed for cooling, which Google describes as a "phenomenal step forward." After accounting for "electrical losses and other non-cooling inefficiencies," this 40 percent reduction translated into a 15 percent reduction in overall power saving, says Google.

First was the Monte Carlo tree search, an algorithm that rather than attempting to examine all possible future moves instead tests a sparse selection of them, combining their value in a sophisticated way to get a better estimate of a move's quality. The second was the (re)discovery of deep networks, a contemporary incarnation of neural networks that had been experimented with since the 1960s, but which was now cheaper, more powerful, and equipped with huge amounts of data with which to train the learning algorithms. The combination of these techniques saw a drastic improvement in Go-playing programs, and ultimately Google DeepMind's AlphaGo program beat Go world champion Lee Sedol in March 2016. Now that Go has fallen, where do we go from here? Following Kasparov's defeat in 1997, scientists considered that the challenge for AI was not to conquer some cerebral game.

Once, I dreamed I was at a man's funeral. According to the deceased's instructions, each of his toes were to be buried in tiny, individual coffins. When I woke up, I wondered, "What could it mean?" According to some neuroscience research on dreams, like that of the Harvard psychiatrist Allan Hobson, the coffined toes might mean absolutely nothing. In his view, dreams are essentially narratives that our frontal brain areas piece together from chaotic brain signals originating from the brain stem. I might look back on that dream and derive some meaning from it after the fact, but it's not like those coffined toes are my brain's way of telling me something important.
