Opening a cognitive computing center in Romania is on the list of upcoming activities of the American IT company โ€“ IBM. The Ministry of Communications and Information Society has recently informed the public about the ongoing negotiations with IBM on setting up a specialized center for cognitive technology in Romania, as reported by Business Review. According to their statement, the Romanian government has already signed a memorandum of understanding with IBM. Both the Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Communications and Information Society have emphasized the importance of cognitive computing technology as a prosperous growth area for Romania. They have identified it as a high potential for the country to become a leader in the industry.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence exhibited by machines. In computer science, an ideal "intelligent" machine is a flexible rational agent that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal.[1] Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".[2] As machines become increasingly capable, facilities once thought to require intelligence are removed from the definition. AI research is divided into subfields[4] that focus on specific problems or on specific approaches or on the use of a particular tool or towards satisfying particular applications. The central problems (or goals) of AI research include reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, natural language processing (communication), perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects.[5] General intelligence is among the field's long-term goals.[6] Approaches include statistical methods, computational intelligence, soft computing (e.g. machine learning), and traditional symbolic AI. Many tools are used in AI, including versions of search and mathematical optimization, logic, methods based on probability and economics. The AI field draws upon computer science, mathematics, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience and artificial psychology. The field was founded on the claim that human intelligence "can be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it."[7] This raises philosophical arguments about the nature of the mind and the ethics of creating artificial beings endowed with human-like intelligence, issues which have been explored by myth, fiction and philosophy since antiquity.[8] Attempts to create artificial intelligence has experienced many setbacks, including the ALPAC report of 1966, the abandonment of perceptrons in 1970, the Lighthill Report of 1973 and the collapse of the Lisp machine market in 1987. In the twenty-first century AI techniques became an essential part of the technology industry, helping to solve many challenging problems in computer science.[9]

But now a new study has revealed that our eyes may be far better than we could possibly have imagined in dark conditions. It found that the human eye is capable of detecting as little as a single photon - the subatomic particles that make up light - hitting the retina in a dark room. The study found that the human eye (pictured) is able to detect single photons - tiny particles of light - suggesting that people's night vision may be much more advanced than previously thought More than 30,000 trials were carried out by three men in their 20s, with one wearing contact lenses. For each test, the men sat in a completely dark room while wearing headphones with their heads kept motionless using a headrest.

The technology, which is described in the current issue of Nature Nanotechnology, is capable of packing data as dense as 500 terabytes per square inch. Theoretically, the device could store the entire contents of the US Library of Congress within a 0.1-mm-wide cube--though the proof-of-concept demonstrated by the group topped out at 1 kilobyte. On Tuesday, DigitalGlobe, a satellite-imagery company, announced that it will provide high-resolution pictures of the planet's surface to Uber. DigitalGlobe is the primary provider of satellite imagery to Google, Apple, and the U.S. government.


Land Rover's AI Team helps build Faster Sailing Boat

As artificial intelligence (AI) makes deeper inroads to improve our daily life, a group of Land Rover engineers have helped the British Land Rover BAR team by building a faster boat so that they could win the sailing competition America's Cup. Using AI, the engineers worked for more than a year to find patterns in the boat's performance data which could be used to make it go faster, the company said in a statement on Thursday. Land Rover BAR is second in America's Cup World Series rankings, following a podium finish in Chicago in the US recently. The next leg is in the island city of Portsmouth from July 21-24 when the team will try to close the 10-point gap to series leader Emirates Team New Zealand. "Land Rover's AI could prove the difference in its bid to win the America's Cup for the first time for Britain," said Sir Ben Ainslie, Land Rover BAR Team's principal and skipper.
