Artificial Intelligence Startups Nudge Giants to 'Think Big'
Ronnie Vuine runs a Berlin-based startup that harnesses artificial intelligence for industrial uses – but that doesn't mean he's all business, all the time. His company Micropsi Industries also programmed an A.I. game piece known as D1 "for fun, and because we want to show what's possible," he told Handelsblatt. D1's A.I. "brain" looks a bit like a fire hydrant spraying out countless tiny streams of water. The figure uses trial and error to track down food, Mr. Vuine explained, and each stream represents a different experience.
Apple has bought a machine-learning startup
Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display
Chatbot offers free legal aid to the homeless
A Stanford undergrad's AI-based chatbot has already helped us with our parking tickets and various legal issues, but now his DoNotPay bot is taking on an even bigger, trickier issue. After receiving acclaim for the bot, which challenged over 160,000 tickets, Joshua Browder taught the program how to help homeless people in the UK claim their right to public housing. The user simply asks for help, and the bot will ask them a series of questions to determine how best to help them. Usually this will involve crafting a claim letter, which the bot fills in with the information that's been provided. In the end, people can save hundreds of dollars in legal advising fees when they need that money the most.
Robots – faithful servants or existential threat? - Royal Academy of Engineering
The first UK Robotics Week took place from 27 June to 1 July, with events and activities around the country showcasing leading UK technology and engineering research in robotics and autonomous design. Co-ordinated by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems (UK-RAS) Network, and supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the week sees robotic research groups from around the world visiting the UK to demonstrate their latest technologies in surgical robotics, field robotics, autonomous driving and unmanned aerial vehicles, while other challenges are set to engage and inspire school, college and university students. On 29 June, the Academy hosted a panel discussion on robotic ethics. The event also featured a Pepper and a NAO robot, from London Design and Engineering UTC, which will be some of the first in the UK to be used in an educational setting. In Munich, Germany, the technology conglomerate Siemens AG is betting 1.1 billion on digital technologies, such as the proposition that blockchain data can be leveraged by machine learning to improve the secure transmission of data used in energy trading. Siemens is welcoming its employees and independent firms to bid for the money if they are willing to research how Siemens can develop businesses that use artificial intelligence. Siemens is just one of a number of companies embracing machine learning--the combination of artificial intelligence and deep analytics that enables enterprises to make predictions on large amounts of data and allows developers to experiment by incorporating features like speech and pattern recognition, as well as statistical techniques, into their analysis. And HPE's recent announcement of "machine learning as a service" (MLaaS) is aimed at helping the process really take off. Speaking at HPE Discover Las Vegas 2016, HPE Executive Vice President Robert Youngjohns called machine learning and deep analytics the most fundamental change we're ever going to see.

As we continue to chart the evolution of humanoid robots, humanity seems to be bypassing ethics over practicality. Robots already have advanced to a point that is leading to serious concern about the economic impact of humans being outsourced to robots for tasks as diverse as service, manufacturing, nursing, housework, yard maintenance and full-fledged agricultural duties. Some are predicting that robots of all types could fully replace humans by 2045. Google buys machine learning startup Moodstocks to help your phone's camera identify objects
Google announced today that it has acquired Paris-based Moodstocks, a startup that has developed machine learning technology to bolster the image recognition features on smartphones. "We continue to pursue our machine learning and research efforts," wrote Vincent Simonet, head of the research and development team for France Google, "and Moodstocks is the latest proof of our commitment to this area." Today, we're thrilled to announce that we've reached an agreement to join forces with Google in order to deploy our work at scale. We expect the acquisition to be completed in the next few weeks. Our focus will be to build great image recognition tools within Google, but rest assured that current paying Moodstocks customers will be able to use it until the end of their subscription. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
