A Three Spatial Dimension Wave Latent Force Model for Describing Excitation Sources and Electric Potentials Produced by Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment for Parkinson's Disease. Static models based on quasi-static approximation are common approaches for DBS modeling. While this simplification has been validated for bioelectric sources, its application to rapid stimulation pulses, which contain more high-frequency power, may not be appropriate, as DBS therapeutic results depend on stimulus parameters such as frequency and pulse width, which are related to time variations of the electric field. We propose an alternative hybrid approach based on probabilistic models and differential equations, by using Gaussian processes and wave equation. Our model avoids quasi-static approximation, moreover, it is able to describe dynamic behavior of DBS. Therefore, the proposed model may be used to obtain a more realistic phenomenon description. The proposed model can also solve inverse problems, i.e. to recover the corresponding source of excitation, given electric potential distribution. The electric potential produced by a time-varying source was predicted using proposed model. For static sources, the electric potential produced by different electrode configurations were modeled. Four different sources of excitation were recovered by solving the inverse problem. We compare our outcomes with the electric potential obtained by solving Poisson's equation using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Our approach is able to take into account time variations of the source and the produced field. Also, inverse problem can be addressed using the proposed model. The electric potential calculated with the proposed model is close to the potential obtained by solving Poisson's equation using FEM.

Described as a'psuedo-satellite', the cutting-edge drone can fly at more than 70,000ft – twice the altitude of a commercial airliner – so high that it is not affected by the weather. The 4.3 million ( 5.6m) Star Trek-style Zephyr S will be used by the elite forces to track terror targets worldwide. It flies by day on solar power which also recharges its lithium-sulphur batteries to power it by night. With a wingspan of 22.5m (74 feet), it can be launched by four military personnel on their shoulders.

A Chinese factory near Shanghai is relying on a new breed of workers to maintain its competitive advantage in assembling electronics devices: small robots designed in Germany. Suzhou Victory Precision Manufacture Co.'s chairman, Yugen Gao, said the days when the company drew its strength from China's cheap and hardworking employees are gone. "We've been losing that edge in the past three years," said Mr. Gao in his office, overlooking rows of buildings where a battalion of robots was cranking out computer keyboards. China's appetite for European-made industrial robots is rapidly growing, as rising wages, a shrinking workforce and cultural changes drive more Chinese businesses to automation. The types of robots favored by Chinese manufacturers are also changing, as automation spreads from heavy industries such as auto manufacturing to those that require more precise, flexible robots capable of handling and assembling smaller products, including consumer electronics and apparel. At stake is whether China can retain its dominance in manufacturing.

Ford announces plans to deliver driverless cars for ride hailing by 2021
Ford Motor Co. became the world's first automaker to announce hard plans to deliver driverless cars. "We'll have mass-produced, fully autonomous cars on the road in five years," said Raj Nair, head of global product development, at an event Tuesday in Palo Alto, Calif. Ford said the cars would be first used for ride hailing and ride sharing, but no companies were named. A few years after that, the company plans to roll out driverless cars to consumers. All the carmakers, plus Google and maybe Apple, are working on driverless cars, but none has announced firm dates.

How Olympic athletes use machine learning and data analysis to reach peak performance levels
For the first time ever, Ireland will have a field hockey team participating in the Summer Olympics. To make sure its athletes are performing at the highest level, the national team is getting some help from an Ireland-based startup that develops biometric measurement technology to identify players at risk for injury. Kitman Labs, based in Dublin with offices in Silicon Valley, is working with both the Irish national field hockey team and the South African rugby team as they compete in this month's Summer Olympics. The company's "Athlete Optimization System" analyzes athlete data collected from multiple systems including wearable trackers that show workload information and other data related to sleep, hydration, diet, mood, stress, and perceived muscle soreness. Coaches can look at the analytics to help drive decision-making related to the amount of training an athlete should be doing.
