Mustafa was Co-founder and Chief Product Officer of DeepMind Technologies, a leading AI company backed by Founders Fund, Li Ka-Shing, Elon Musk, and David Bonderman amongst others, which was bought by Google in 2014 in their largest European acquisition to date. He is now Head of Applied AI at Google DeepMind, responsible for integrating the company's technology across a wide range of Google products. And he has launched DeepMind Health in an effort to build clinician-led technology in the NHS. At 19, Mustafa dropped out of Oxford University to help set up a telephone counselling service, building it to become one of the largest mental health support services of its kind in the UK. He then worked as a Policy Officer for the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone.

Under her watch, myKai, the bot she was hired to craft a personality for, would be neither female nor male. Feldman's boss at Kasisto, Dror Oren, says the work the team has done with the bot made him more outspoken about the need for equality in tech than he'd have imagined going into the project, and he's a self-proclaimed feminist to begin with. Now, he's hyperaware of the differences between the personality of Kai and overly feminine answers inside similar products made by most large tech companies. Kasisto is on to something.

University of Washington researchers answered that question with the MegaFace Challenge, the world's first competition aimed at evaluating and improving the performance of face recognition algorithms at the million person scale.
Telenor supports Norwegian entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence research
Telenor Group today announces two specific initiatives to support entrepreneurship and competence building in Norway. The ambition is to strengthen the nation s competitiveness and to stimulate job creation by Norwegian startups. In collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the leading research institute SINTEF, Telenor will establish a lab focused on artificial intelligence and big data at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. As the second initiative, Telenor will develop and launch a dedicated, next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) network in several Norwegian cities. Norwegian startups and students will get cost-free access to the IoT network in order to develop and test their products and services. The first pilot will be located in Oslo, in collaboration with StartupLab.
Automakers are racing to get fully self-driving cars on our roads by 2021
Mark your calendars: automakers plan to put truly autonomous cars on our roads in the next five years. Ford has announced that it will manufacture a fleet of fully automated driverless cars, without steering wheels or pedals, and put them into commercial operation by 2021. The company--which has previously been modest about its self-driving-car claims--says that the vehicles will initially be used in ride-sharing fleets and for package delivery services, though it doesn't say which companies might be involved. To enact its plan, Ford has acquired the Israeli machine-learning firm SAIPS and invested 75 million into the laser imaging company Velodyne, and it plans to double the size of its Silicon Valley staff. But it isn't the first to give a firm date for the arrival of fully self-driving cars.

Microsoft wants to make curing people easier with artificial intelligence
The medical industry could be set for a "revolution" with the emergence of more complex artificial intelligence (AI), one of Microsoft's top researchers told CNBC on Wednesday, as technology giants look to enter the health care space. AI is a broad area, but one part of this called "machine learning", can be used to analyze a large amount of data, make predictions, and offer personalized recommendations. In theory, machine learning means that a piece of computer software can learn and get smarter. Microsoft and other major U.S. technology giants have been investing in AI, acquiring smaller companies, and finding applications. For Microsoft, the medical industry could be transformed with the tech.
