Artificial intelligence behind art project at Tate

Artifical intelligence is bossing it over at Tate Britain as the Recognition experience kicks off at the London museum for a three-month residency. The AI initiative will deliver an ever-expanding gallery at it trawls through the Tate's online collection of British material, comparing artworks with news images from Reuters based on visual/thematic similarities. The creative initiative boasts multiple artificial intelligence technologies like computer vision capabilities – think object recognition, facial recognition, colour and composition analysis – and the natural language processing of text associated with images. The results of the experiment will be presented on the virtual gallery site at the close of the project. Recognition was developed by Italy-based comms research outfit Fabrica as a way of applying rational thinking to the subject like art in response to the challenge raised by the 2016 IK Prize for the Tate and Microsoft aimed at improving the understanding of art in the Tate collection.


This AI Sees Things in Art That Humans Don't

It might not be obvious to a human, but an artificial intelligence programme sees distinct similarities in, say, the composition of the subjects, or colour of their outfits. Called Recognition, the AI programme compares current photojournalism provided by Reuters with works from the Tate's collection to find its best match. It pairs the images based on image recognition techniques that analyse objects, faces, composition, and context gleaned from metadata. He and teammates Coralie Gourguechon, Monica Lanaro, and Isaac Valentin created the project to enter (and win) the Tate's 2016 IK Prize for digital innovation, which is run in partnership with Microsoft.


Amazon beefs up machine learning presence in UK with new team of researchers

Amazon is taking on a new machine learning team, to operate out of Cambridge, UK, according to a Facebook post spotted by reporter Jack Clark. Neil Lawrence, a professor of machine learning and computational biology at the University of Sheffield, announced to his Facebook followers that he and his team of students will be joining the Seattle tech titan. Ralf Herbrich, Amazon's Director of Machine Learning Science, said that Lawrence's team will partner with his operation in Berlin, in a comment on the Facebook thread. Herbrich's team focuses on "Forecasting, Content Linkage, Scalable Machine Learning Services and Vision-Assisted Technologies," which may offer a glimpse into the kind of work that the new UK team will be doing. Both Herbrich and Lawrence previously worked for the Seattle-area's other tech titan, Microsoft.

Dmitry Malioutov can't say much about what he built. As a research scientist at IBM, Malioutov spends part of his time building machine learning systems that solve difficult problems faced by IBM's corporate clients. One such program was meant for a large insurance corporation. It was a challenging assignment, requiring a sophisticated algorithm. When it came time to describe the results to his client, though, there was a wrinkle. "We couldn't explain the model to them because they didn't have the training in machine learning." In fact, it may not have helped even if they were machine learning experts. That's because the model was an artificial neural network, a program that takes in a given type of data--in this case, the insurance company's customer records--and finds patterns in them. These networks have been in practical use for over half a century, but lately they've seen a resurgence, powering breakthroughs in everything from speech recognition and language translation to Go-playing robots and self-driving cars.

World's first driverless buses with a top speed of 12mph take to roads in France

The world's first driverless buses will take to roads in France this weekend. The buses will drive around the centre of Lyon at 12mph in year-long experiment starting on Saturday. They can carry up to 15 people between five stops on a 10-minute route. The buses, costing 170,000 each, are fitted with high-tech equipment including laser sensors, stereo vision and GPS. They have already been tested in other French cities and in Sion, Switzerland but without carrying passengers.
