A Probabilistic Modeling Approach to Hearing Loss Compensation

Hearing Aid (HA) algorithms need to be tuned ("fitted") to match the impairment of each specific patient. The lack of a fundamental HA fitting theory is a strong contributing factor to an unsatisfying sound experience for about 20% of hearing aid patients. This paper proposes a probabilistic modeling approach to the design of HA algorithms. The proposed method relies on a generative probabilistic model for the hearing loss problem and provides for automated inference of the corresponding (1) signal processing algorithm, (2) the fitting solution as well as a principled (3) performance evaluation metric. All three tasks are realized as message passing algorithms in a factor graph representation of the generative model, which in principle allows for fast implementation on hearing aid or mobile device hardware. The methods are theoretically worked out and simulated with a custom-built factor graph toolbox for a specific hearing loss model.

PARIS โ€“ Europe's Rosetta spacecraft has finally spotted its tiny lander, Philae, thought to be lost forever, stuck in a ditch on the surface of a comet hurtling through space, ground controllers said Monday. I've found @Philae2014!!" the European Space Agency (ESA) tweeted on behalf of Rosetta, orbiting comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko at some 682 million km (424 million miles) from Earth. The agency released a photo of the washing machine-sized robot lab on the comet's rough surface, one of its three legs thrust dramatically into the air. This was the first sighting of Philae since its rough landing in November 2014. The image was captured by Rosetta's OSIRIS narrow-angle camera on Friday and downloaded two days later -- just weeks before the official end of the groundbreaking science mission to unravel the mysteries of life on Earth. "With only a month left of the Rosetta mission, we are so happy to have finally imaged Philae and to see it in such amazing detail," Cecilia Tubiana of the OSIRIS camera team, the first person to see the images, said in a statement. The Twitter page of Philae, its communications unit switched off in July, remained silent. The 100-kg (220-pound) probe touched down on comet 67P in November 2014, after a 10-year, 6.5-billion-km (4-billion-mile) journey piggybacking on Rosetta. Philae bounced several times after its harpoons failed to fire, and ended up in a ditch shadowed from the sun's battery-replenishing rays. The tiny lab managed to conduct 60 hours of experiments and send home data before running out of power and entering standby mode on Nov. 15, 2014. "We were beginning to think that Philae would remain lost forever.

Tate Britain Launches Fabrica's Artificial Intelligence Installation Artinfo

A new installation on display until November 27 brings artificial intelligence into London's Tate Britain for the first time. The winner of Tate's IK Prize 2016 -- an annual commission by Tate in association with Microsoft that awards "digital innovation" -- the work "Recognition" was created by Italian communications research center Fabrica. It uses AI to match a constantly updating stream of news images and photojournalism from Reuters with works from the Tate's extensive collections. Currently on display in a dedicated gallery at Tate Britain and on the website recognition.tate.org.uk, the program uses an algorithm that judges images based on four criteria: object recognition, facial recognition, composition, and by analyzing accompanying text data to match images by context. Through this, Fabrica is hoping to uncover "inspiring, insightful, humorous, and thought-provoking relationships," according to a statement.

AI Spot Lung Diseases Better

Artificial Intelligence (AI) or machine learning can be used to help improve the accuracy of the diagnosis in lung diseases, finds a study. Machine learning utilizes algorithms that can learn from and perform predictive data analysis. The team developed an algorithm process in addition to the routine lung function parameters and clinical variables of smoking history, body mass index (BMI) and age. Based on the pattern of both the clinical and lung function data, the algorithm makes a suggestion for the most likely diagnosis. "We have demonstrated that AI can provide us with a more accurate diagnosis. The algorithm can simulate the complex reasoning that a clinician uses to give their diagnosis, but in a more standardized and objective way so it removes any bias," said Wim Janssens from the University of Leuven in Belgium.
