You wouldn't have GPS if it weren't for this algorithm
Many of the inventors who fueled the digital revolution have become household names. Innovators such as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg all contributed mightily to the technologies that have transformed our daily lives and society. If you're not an engineer, however, you have probably never heard of the brilliant inventor Rudolf Kálmán, a Budapest-born engineer and mathematician who died on July 2 in Gainesville, Florida, at age 86. His fundamental contribution, an algorithm called the Kalman filter, made possible many essential technological achievements of the last 50 years. These include aerospace systems such as the computers that landed Apollo astronauts on the moon, robotic vehicles that explore our world from the deep sea to the outer planets, and nearly any endeavor that needs to estimate the state of the world from noisy data. Someone once described the entire GPS system--an Earth-girdling constellation of satellites, ground stations, and computers as "one enormous Kalman filter."
Tesla: Autopilot not behind Netherlands wreck
Tesla says its self-driving Autopilot feature was not active when an unidentified Model S driver in the Netherlands was killed in a Wednesday accident. The car crashed into a tree. According to the NL Times, the car flipped, landing upside down, with some of its batteries becoming loose. In a statement provided to USA TODAY the company denied that its self-driving technology, which was under fire following several crashes this summer, was to blame. In May an Ohio man was killed while using the feature in Florida.

AI-enabled messaging programs that respond to text-based requests -- are the latest innovation that startups and corporations are using to serve existing customers and bring in new ones. Companies across a wide variety of industries are building these tools on popular messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, Slack, Kik, and Hipchat, as well as on their own websites and apps. Some are even available by text, to help users do things like fight parking tickets, respond to customer service inquiries, and order tacos. This is by no means an exhaustive list, so if you see we're missing a chatbot that's currently up and running, please share the link with us in the comments section. We'll add new, significant chatbots to the list over time.
Google's DeepMind has learnt how to talk like a human
Anyone that might be concerned about computers taking over look away now, because they are a step closer to sounding just like humans. Researchers in the UK at Google's DeepMind unit have been working on making computer-generated speech sound as "natural" as humans. The technology, called WaveNet, which is focused on the area of speech synthesis, or text-to-speech, was found to sound more natural than any of Google's products. However, this was only achieved after the WaveNet artificial neural network was trained to produce English and Chinese speech which required copious amounts of computing power, so the technology probably won't be hitting the mainstream any time soon. Using a convolutional neural network, which is used for artificial intelligence in deep learning, it is trained on data and then the systems make inferences about new data, in addition to being used to generate new data.

I don't know why this video of the Yellow Drum Machine popped up in my YouTube feed again, but hey, it's one of my favorite robots of all time: This video was recorded during a lucky run, usually the robot is not able to maintain balance for this long. The shaking is caused by poor state estimation (we only use onboard sensors). I'd love to see IHMC re-run the DRC Finals tasks at some point, just to illustrate how much improvement has been made in Atlas' autonomy and not-falling-over-ness.
Fifa 17 demo release date: Game to be released early to fans – but only for a few days
The Fifa 17 demo is about to be released, letting lucky players get their first chance to play the game – but just for a few days. The early look at the game will reportedly arrive for download on Tuesday, and probably be available for just a few days. After that, fans will have no way of getting a go at the game until 29 September, when the full game comes out. Some reports had initially suggested that the demo was due to be released today. But it hasn't yet hit the online stores.
Legendary physicist Freeman Dyson talks about math, nuclear rockets, and astounding things about the universe
Mathematician and physicist Freeman Dyson has had a career as varied as it has been successful. A former professor of physics at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, he has worked on the unification of the three versions of quantum electrodynamics invented by Richard Feynman, nuclear reactors, solid-state physics, ferromagnetism, astrophysics, biology, and the application of useful and elegant math problems. One of his ideas, the Dyson Sphere, was featured in a "Star Trek" episode. Today, Dyson frequently writes about science and technology's relationship to ethics and social issues. Business Insider sat down with him and talked about math, war, the human brain, the education system, and the Orion Project. This interview has been edited for clarity and length. Elena Holodny: Who has most inspired you in either math or science? Dick Feynman ... he has now become famous, to my great joy, because when I knew him he was completely unknown. But I recognized him as being something special. He was only for a short time at Cornell when I was a student and he was a young professor. So I didn't work with him, but I just sat at his feet, literally, and listened to him talk. He was a clown, of course, and also a genius. It was a good combination.
