Bionic Exoskeleton Helps Paralyzed Woman Complete Half Marathon
A paralyzed woman has accomplished an amazing feat: finishing a half marathon. With the help of a bionic suit, 36-year-old Claire Lomas was able to finish Sunday the Great North Run in England after just five days. Lomas has been paralyzed from her chest down since 2007 when she was in a horseback riding accident. Lomas was able to manage the feat by using a ReWalk robotic exoskeleton, which uses motion sensors to help her lift and move her legs along the route. The suit has lightweight braces that support the legs and motors that rotate the joints along the way.
Age of the restauroids: Will robots become a reality in restaurants?
While it's a bit premature to start fearing for your job just yet, robots are on the rise in the restaurant sector. The US' influential National Restaurant Association show in Chicago featured three robots this year: a sushi bot that can make 3,600 pieces of nigiri per hour; a vending-machine-style robot that makes bespoke salads and a robotic fry cook. More impressively, over in Japan, Pizza Hut is trialling a robotic waiter called Pepper. If the promotional video is to be believed, the 3ft humanoid is extremely sophisticated, verbally interacting with diners in much the same way as a human being. It can even respond to questions about dietary requirements, giving info on calorie counts and fat content.
The real Minority Report: By 2030, police could use AI to predict and prevent crimes BEFORE they happen
From surveillance cameras to police drones, cities around the world are already using AI for public safety and security. And a new report suggests that artificial intelligence could go one step further, helping police prevent crimes before they even happen. While this technique will have a positive impact on crime prevention, it could also put millions of jobs at risk, the report claims. Police could be using Minority Report-style AI to predict and prevent crimes by 2030. The software would mimic the powers of the'precogs' from the 2002 film Minority Report (scene pictured) They say that'predictive policing' will be heavily relied upon by 2030. The report points out that machine learning, which allows computers to learn for themselves, is already being used, and could have major implications for fighting crime.

Q&A: Should we seed life on alien worlds?
Astronomers have detected more than 3000 planets beyond our solar system, and just a couple weeks ago they discovered an Earth-like planet in the solar system next door. Most--if not all--of these worlds are unlikely to harbor life, but what if we put it there? In an essay published last month in Astrophysics and Space Science, theoretical physicist Claudius Gros of Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany suggests we do just that. His proposed Genesis Project would send artificially intelligent probes to lifeless worlds to seed them with microbes. Over millions of years, they might evolve into multicellular organisms, and, perhaps eventually, plants and animals.

Machine Learning in a Year – Learning New Stuff
During the christmas vacation of 2015, I got a motivational boost again and decided try out Kaggle. So I spent quite some time experimenting with various algorithms for their Homesite Quote Conversion, Otto Group Product Classification and Bike Sharing Demand contests. The main takeaway from this was the experience of iteratively improving the results by experimenting with the algorithms and the data. I learned to trust my logic when doing machine learning. If tweaking a parameter or engineering a new feature seems like a good idea logically, it's quite likely that it actually will help.

UK's first robot kidney transplant
Robots have been used to carry out kidney transplants for the first time in the UK. The machines are controlled by surgeons but computers and precision motors allow greater accuracy, meaning much less painful damage to muscle. As a result, the man and woman who had the operations at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London were able to recover using only paracetamol rather than morphine. Siobhan Morris, 42, who underwent the operation a week ago, had previously had a kidney transplant by traditional open surgery, but found the pain with the robotic method was'probably 80 per cent less'. 'I was amazed,' the mother-of-two from Kent told The Sunday Times.
Artificial Intelligence: A new exhibition looks at art curation by algorithm
Seeing how AI programmes use algorithms to interpret images, and replicate our human connection in the modern world: that's the premise of Tate Britain's new exhibition, Recognition. The exhibition uses artificial intelligence technologies (such as object and facial recognition) to pair photos from news agency Reuters with paintings from the Tate collection. Visitors are able to view the virtual gallery created by the programme, and learn about why it chose each specific art/photo match, as well as share their favourite choices made by the machine. They can also help out the AI by making their own comparisons between Reuters' real-time news images and the museum's archives. The aim of the project is to find out whether, over the course of three months, the AI programme can learn and improve on its pairings, using its own observations as well as the input of Tate visitors.
