You are statistically incredibly more likely to die in a car crash than on an airplane, but people still fear flying more than driving. Why? Partly, psychologists say, we blow the risks out of proportion because we don't like feeling out of control of our fate. Our life is in the pilot's hands. Self-driving cars will inevitably give people a similar feeling, even if they are much safer than today's vehicles. Computers are expected to be vastly better drivers than humans, but that requires people to turn over the wheel--knowing they won't have control over the computer's split-second decisions if there is an accident.

While Star Trek-style teleportation is still a long way off, researchers have revealed a major breakthrough in the field of quantum travel. Two separate teams have transferred quantum information over several miles of fibre optic networks in an urban network. The results could lead to more secure bank accounts, a faster internet and possibly even open the door to the controversial idea of human teleportation. One of the potential applications for quantum teleportation is a network of quantum computers (illustrated) and a'quantum internet' that is far faster and much more secure than current networks When atoms are'entangled' the measurement of one of the atoms will not only cause it to'pick' one state, but it will also instantaneously cause the atoms it is entangled with to do the same, even if that atom has not been measured itself. This means we automatically know information about all the atoms that are entangled at once, just by measuring one, and it does not matter how far apart in space the two entangled atoms are.

Amsterdam's canals are getting 'Roboats': Self-driving vessels will navigate the city's waterways by 2017

Amsterdam is well known for its vast waterway, which has a total of 165 canals, with a combined length of over 62 miles (100km). While boats already regularly operate on the waters, the city is now looking to the future of transportation โ€“ self-driving boats. The Amsterdam Institute for Metropolitan Solutions (AMS) has today announced a new five-year research plan, under the name'Roboat', to explore the possibility of autonomous floating vehicles. Amsterdam is well known for its waterway, which has a total of 165 canals, with a combined length of over 62 miles (100 kilometres). While boats do regularly operate on the waters, the city is now looking to the future of transportation โ€“ self-driving boats (artist's impression) AMS has collaborated with researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University ad Research to create the Roboats.

When it comes to autonomous vehicles why stop on land when you can expand to the seas? The two groups announced on Monday that they have joined forces to create the cleverly named Roboat to explore the possibilities of creating self-driving boats. The boats would be used for a variety of functions, including transporting people and goods, but would also be capable of much more. "Imagine a fleet of autonomous boats for the transportation of goods and people," says Carlo Ratti, professor at MIT and principal investigator in the Roboat-program in a statement announcing the partnership, "but also think of dynamic and temporary floating infrastructure like on-demand bridges and stages, that can be assembled or disassembled in a matter of hours." As part of the research project MIT will be contributing 20 million out of a five-year budget of 25 million (about 27.9 million), and while the project will be based in Amsterdam the group hopes to apply its findings to other urbans areas around the world.

This is nothing like the feared "singularity," that prophesied (if dubious) moment when machines become smarter than humans and then, to prove it, commence wiping us out. If a law has a first name, that's a bad sign

Donald Trump claims to be running for president as an outsider. But his campaign has resorted to one of the oldest tricks in the book in touting "Kate's Law." Named after Kate Steinle, who was allegedly fatally shot by a Mexican national in the country illegally, the law would set a mandatory minimum prison sentence of five years for anyone who returns to the United States after having been deported. Trump says this is the bill he'll send to Congress on his first day in the White House. Bills named after sympathetic victims are the worst form of knee-jerk lawmaking, but it's a surefire political vote-getting device.
