New drugs typically take 12-14 years to make it to market, with a 2014 report finding that the average cost of getting a new drug to market had ballooned to a whopping 2.6 billion. It's a topic I've covered before, with a study published earlier this year highlighting how automation could be used to reduce the cost of drug discovery by approximately 70%. It's an approach that a number of companies are taking to market. For instance, London based start-up Benevolent.AI utilizes complex AI to look for patterns in the scientific literature. They have already managed to identify two potential drug targets for Alzheimer's that has already attracted the attention of pharmaceutical companies.

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Clinton seen going toe-to-toe with Putin if she wins November election
WASHINGTON – When Hillary Clinton attended her first major White House meeting on Russia in February 2009, the new secretary of state insisted that she wanted to play a leading role in President Barack Obama's effort to "reset" U.S. relations with Moscow. But while Clinton became implementer-in-chief for one of Obama's signature first-term initiatives, she was consistently more skeptical than most of his top aides about how far Russian leader Vladimir Putin was prepared to go in turning the page, according to current and former U.S. officials. That stance is indicative of how she will go about dealing with Moscow if she is elected U.S. president on Nov. 8, aides to both Clinton and Obama said. With U.S. relations with Moscow already plumbing post-Cold War lows, the aides and veteran Russia watchers said she will likely take a harder line than Obama or Republican nominee Donald Trump, who has praised Putin as a strong leader. Dealing with Putin, who is flexing his geopolitical muscle from Ukraine to Syria to cyberspace, will be among Clinton's biggest foreign policy challenges -- one made more daunting by the personal bad blood between them.

According to market research firm Forrester Research, more than 6% of jobs currently performed by human beings will be taken over by robots in the next five years. We all knew the day was coming when robots would become more intelligent and start replacing human beings at the workplace, especially in jobs that need to follow a set pattern or jobs that are repetitive in nature. But that day seems closer than ever with retailers like Amazon (AMZN) and Wal-Mart (WMT) seemingly on the cusp of using automation on a large scale. For a company like Amazon, automation is nothing new. They already have robots manning their warehouses, and the company has been working for a while testing drone deliveries in the U.K. The U.S. government refused permission for drone testing, so Amazon is doing it across the pond.

Lamp lighters once performed a vital service for Londoners. Every evening as dusk fell they lit the gas lamps that illuminated the city's shadowy streets, returning just before dawn to extinguish the flames. It was a respectable job, often passed from father to son. But, apart from the small band of British Gas engineers who maintain the 1,500 gas lamps still clustered around the royal parks, Westminster and Covent Garden, lamp lighters are now a thing of the past, their jobs snuffed out by automated timers and electricity. The lamp lighters are part of a wider narrative that shapes every city: technological change. Scientific advances and new technologies often enable dramatic improvements in public services and urban life, eradicating some jobs while creating new types of employment.

High energy costs of data centres (up to 3% of global energy use) have driven their relocation to places like Iceland, where cold climates increase cooling efficiency. Meanwhile, about 40% of people on the planet live in coastal cities. To simultaneously cope with high real estate costs in these oceanfront growth centres, reduce latency, and overcome the typically high expense of cooling data centers, Microsoft successfully tested a prototype underwater data centre off the coast of California last year.

Vehicle Prognostics Pave the Way for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Progression
As real-time, connected vehicle prognostics move rapidly into consumer and commercial transportation, they pave the way for the progression of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), greater OEM profits and increased customer loyalty. ABI Research forecasts that there will be more than seven million prognostics-enabled, commercial vehicle solutions connected globally by 2021. Vehicle prognostics are able to predict and inform, in real time, future component deviations or failures in advance of any performance impact. As these capabilities move rapidly, automotive prognostics will positively impact the supply chain from manufacturers to repair shops to third-party software providers. "Automotive safety is shifting the industry toward a machine learning focus," says Susan Beardslee, Senior Analyst at ABI Research.
Friendly educational robot designed to help kids with autism
Robots could be used to help kids diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to a new research project carried out jointly by a university and a robotics startup. Researchers at Spain's Universidad Miguel Hernández and the Spanish Aisoy Robotics company are collaborating to investigate how the latter group's pint-size educational Aisoy robot can enhance the effectiveness of therapy sessions at the UMH University Clinic -- particularly related to developing children's emotional, social, and cognitive skills. As an example, the robot will express emotions a child can then identify, or suggest playing certain games. Over the course of their time together, the idea is that kids will build up emotional attachments with the robot, and the interaction will aid with therapeutic adherence. "We already have an Emotional OS, called Airos, which includes an emotional engine, a cognitive engine, and a decision engine," José Manuel del Río, Aisoy's CEO, told Digital Trends.
Learning Continuous Time Bayesian Networks in Non-stationary Domains
Non-stationary continuous time Bayesian networks are introduced. They allow the parents set of each node to change over continuous time. Three settings are developed for learning non-stationary continuous time Bayesian networks from data: known transition times, known number of epochs and unknown number of epochs. A score function for each setting is derived and the corresponding learning algorithm is developed. A set of numerical experiments on synthetic data is used to compare the effectiveness of non-stationary continuous time Bayesian networks to that of non-stationary dynamic Bayesian networks. Furthermore, the performance achieved by non-stationary continuous time Bayesian networks is compared to that achieved by state-of-the-art algorithms on four real-world datasets, namely drosophila, saccharomyces cerevisiae, songbird and macroeconomics.
