Artificial intelligence helps in the discovery of new materials

With the help of artificial intelligence, chemists from the University of Basel in Switzerland have computed the characteristics of about two million crystals made up of four chemical elements. The researchers were able to identify 90 previously unknown thermodynamically stable crystals that can be regarded as new materials. They report on their findings in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters. Elpasolite is a glassy, transparent, shiny and soft mineral with a cubic crystal structure. First discovered in El Paso County (Colorado, USA), it can also be found in the Rocky Mountains, Virginia and the Apennines (Italy).

Gartner also says that by 2020, 60% of enterprise information security budgets will be allocated to rapid detection and response approaches -- up from less than 10% in 2014.1 As threats became more intelligent and sophisticated, traditional security solutions will become inadequate over time because they will continue to make snap judgments based on incomplete information. Robot overlords? Pshaw! I ain't afraid of no AI โ€“ researchers

Artificial intelligence is all the rage in technology and as it progresses at a dizzying pace, the industry is at danger of being overhyped, say researchers. Speaking at a symposium about AI in bioscience, ex-IBM Watson veteran and head of technology at benevolent.ai, Jรฉrรดme Pesenti, warned the audience to have a healthy scepticism about developments in AI. There are great achievements in AI, but in reality the technology is probably "two steps behind PR", Pesenti said. Overselling AI can lead to bogus demos and give unrealistic expectations, he added. "People start with the expectations that AI can do everything. But nothing can do everything - even Watson had its limits."

Emirates NMD bank introduces AI robot Pepper to make banking more convenient

A UAE-based bank is introducing an artificial intelligence robot that will engage with customers by telling them about the products and services. The UAE-based bank Emirates NBD plans to do so in a bid to make banking more convenient. The artificial intelligence (AI) robot called Pepper will make his appearance at the bank's marketing and promotional events in the UAE as well as at select Emirates NBD branches in the near future. Pepper will interact with customers to understand visitation needs and present products and services alternatives in an engaging manner, assisted by the bank's staff. While Pepper will not engage on core banking functions, as the world of artificial intelligence and robots evolves, the bank has announced that it will continue to engage with these technologies to make banking simpler and more convenient.


Microsoft's New Goal: "Solve" Cancer - Petri

Today, Microsoft announced an audacious new goal: its researchers will attempt to "solve" cancer by treating the disease group as information processing systems that can be modeled and reasoned, and then use sophisticated analysis tools to better understand and treat cancer. "At Microsoft's research labs around the world, computer scientists, programmers, engineers and other experts are trying to use computer science to solve one of the most complex and deadly challenges humans face: Cancer."
