Earth's oceans are having a rough time right now. They're oily, hot, acidic, full of dead fish--and their levels are rising. But even though these things are true, it can be hard to grok (or muster up the will to care about) the oceans' subtle changes over decades. Every time you go to the beach, everything's still as blue and salty and vast as it ever was. But these changes directly impact human life (just ask the Marshall Islands). So to make the ocean's plight more relatable, a Swedish sustainability group is putting out a message that will hit you where it counts: right in the nerd.

Robot-written reviews fool academics
Soulless computer algorithms are already churning out weather bulletins, sports reports, rap lyrics and even passable Chinese poetry. But it seems machines have now taken another step towards replacing human enterprise by generating their own reviews of serious academic journal papers that are able to impress even experienced academics. Using automatic text generation software, computer scientists at Italy's University of Trieste created a series of fake peer reviews of genuine journal papers and asked academics of different levels of seniority to say whether they agreed with their recommendations to accept for publication or not. In a quarter of cases, academics said they agreed with the fake review's conclusions, even though they were entirely made up of computer-generated gobbledegook โ or, rather, sentences picked at random from a selection of peer reviews taken from subjects as diverse as brain science, ecology and ornithology. "Sentences like'it would be good if you can also talk about the importance of establishing some good shared benchmarks' or'it would be useful to identify key assumptions in the modelling' are probably well suited to almost any review," explained Eric Medvet, assistant professor at Trieste's department of engineering and architecture, who conducted the experiment with colleagues at his university's Machine Learning Lab.

Acoustic Holograms: 3D Sound Shapes Could Help Medical Diagnostics
When most people think holograms, they think of a floating image, a 3D projection of light. But scientists have designed technology that replaces light in the hologram with sound, giving us acoustic holograms that can be used to manipulate small objects. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, have created these acoustic holograms by first printing a hologram plate using a 3D printer, and then transmitting ultrasound waves through it and into another medium, which could be liquid or gas. The uneven surface of the plate causes phase delays in the waves which affect the medium and therefore other objects or particles suspended in or on it. Peer Fischer, who usually works on tiny robots, was "looking for a way to move large numbers of microparticles simultaneously so that we could assemble them into larger more complex structures" when his team came up with acoustic holography, he said in a statement.

We eat, breathe and sleep artificial intelligence; it truly is running the world as we know it! Now, it's the turn of education; an industry that has been somewhat left behind in recent years. This however, is set to change. We've all read countless articles on how artificial intelligence is stealing our jobs, so surely something must be done to counteract this? Artificial intelligence and automation are now beginning to enter the workplace at a more graduate level and so it's about time that universities rethink what they're doing and how they're doing it; that is to equip graduates with the ability to work effectively alongside artificial intelligence.

Tucked within Google's unremarkable Allo messaging app is a real treasure: Google Assistant, which injects Google Now with an eager-to-please personality that finally provides the give-and-take other digital assistants lack. We've always talked about Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, and Google Now as the three digital assistants from the top smartphone platforms. But the truth is that Google Now was little more than a series of informative cards, while Siri and Cortana preferred a text-based approach with a bit of sass. Google Assistant retains its visual approach, but within a messaging context that really nails it in how you interact with the app itself. Google announced Google Assistant this past May, and the preview version of it is live in Allo, which itself can be used on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) on up.
