Deep Learning Supercomputer in a Box comes to Europe NVIDIA Blog
Software giant SAP, British AI startup BenevolentAI and the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne have become Europe's first users of our new NVIDIA DGX-1 AI supercomputer. This "plug and play" system -- loaded with powerful GPUs and special software for deep learning -- has been designed to help data scientists innovate and get to market faster with AI applications. Enterprise software giant SAP is now using DGX-1 AI supercomputers at its German and Israeli offices, where its teams are building machine learning solutions for SAP's 320,000 customers. In the U.K., BenevolentAI will use DGX-1 as part of its effort to accelerate drug discovery by using deep natural language processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence to formulate new, usable knowledge from complex scientific information. "For the current application of our AI technology in the bioscience space, it will mean that new drug discoveries can be made faster and more efficiently than ever before," said BenevolentAI co-founder and Director Ken Mulvany.

'Partnership on AI' formed by Google, Facebook, Amazon, IBM and Microsoft
Google, Facebook, Amazon, IBM and Microsoft are joining forces to create a new AI partnership dedicated to advancing public understanding of the sector, as well as coming up with standards for future researchers to abide by. Going by the unwieldy name of the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society, the alliance isn't a lobbying organisation (at least, it says it "does not intend" to lobby government bodies). Instead, it says it will "conduct research, recommend best practices, and publish research under an open license in areas such as ethics, fairness and inclusivity; transparency, privacy, and interoperability; collaboration between people and AI systems; and the trustworthiness, reliability and robustness of the technology". There will be equal representation between corporate and non-corporate members on the board of the partnership, and it hopes to invite "academics, non-profits and specialists in policy and ethics" to join. Each of the five founding corporate members has strong AI research teams, some of which have become household names, such as IBM's Watson and Amazon's Alexa.

Machine Learning, driven by the rise of big data and evolving technologies, is emerging as a powerful quantitative investment tool, with financial advisers increasingly recognising the benefits it can bring to investors, according to Man AHL. A recent survey of financial advisers, who attended a series of adviser events held by Man AHL across Australia earlier this month, found that nearly three quarters of advisers (74%) believe Machine Learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, has the potential to change the way we invest in the future. Speaking at the adviser events, Man AHL's Oxford-based Chief Scientist Dr. Anthony Ledford said that Machine Learning has become increasingly important to the alternative investment management industry as it deals with larger and more complex data-sets. "The rise of Machine Learning in quantitative investing is powered by three separate revolutions: the growth in computing power, the explosion of data generation and the maturing of methodologies from statistics, computer science, mathematics and engineering, amongst other disciplines." "As more data become available, sophisticated Machine Learning models enable new patterns to be detected that humans can't easily spot. The technology is a significant area of research focus for Man AHL and we believe our enhanced focus on Machine Learning will be strongly supportive of the evolution of our quantitative investment strategies," Dr. Ledford said.
