PlayStation VR review: A fantastic introduction to Virtual Reality gaming from Sony

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Democracy Disrupted: How Artificial Intelligence changes the way we vote - ThoughtsEmerging

#artificialintelligence

Modern technology is fundamentally reshaping our electoral process. It's time to make it work for us. Public and open debate is a central achievement of democracy. It is a forum for people to articulate their viewpoints, exhibiting candid passion and offering sound facts and logic. It is also a powerful instrument to share informed knowledge with a wide audience of people who possess less subject matter expertise. In the philosophy of Aristotle, public debate is the task of a class of virtuous men, for they, in his mind, constitute ideal rulers and are responsible for sharing their wisdom with common households.

Demystifying AI, ML, DL with Vishal Sikka and real world examples

#artificialintelligence

The technology industry is plagued with buzzword bingo in support of the fashion driven nature of the technology beast. Often confusing and occasionally downright ridiculous, we're never going to prevent smart ass marketers, ably supported by their anal-yst surrogates from making stuff up. The least some of us can do is make clear what is under discussion without mindlessly parroting what others say or conflating one concept with another. The latest in this stream of marketing laden garbage is AI or Artificial Intelligence, smeared with ML or Machine Learning and DL or Deep Learning. Add a soupçon of'robotics' just to amp the volume to something people can'get' and you have the potential for an exotic mix that both captivates the sentient mind but can also plant fear.

Artificial Intelligence Investing - Looks Can Be Deceiving

#artificialintelligence

The omnipotent mythology surrounding artificial intelligence and machine learning, particularly as it relates to investing and trading, is the real bubble that needs to be burst. Such are messages from two of the quantitative trading world's brightest minds. Speaking at the Bloomberg Markets Most Influential Summit Wednesday, David Siegel, founder of the 37 billion Two Sigma Investments, warned the audience that artificial intelligence lacks common sense. Seven days ago Ewan Kirk, founder of the 4.5 billion Cantab Capital Partners and an original managed futures CTA pioneer, penned an influential piece in Institutional Investor titled "Beneath the Sizzle of Artificial Intelligence." His advice to investors was clear: buy the steak, not the sizzle.

Internet Drones: Russia Likely To Shoot Down Aircraft If It Threatens Security

International Business Times

Russia will shoot down internet drones that pose a threat to the country's security, reports said Tuesday, citing Russian officials. Several tech companies, including Google and Facebook, are planning to provide internet using drones to remote places that do not have access to the cyberspace. State-run telecom company Rostelecom cautioned the Russian telecommunications industry that internet-sharing drones, such as those from Britain's OneWeb and South Korea's Samsung, are likely to pose a security threat, Russian language Life news reported. "Ground operators might encounter problems. If foreign players win here, it could be an issue for [Russia's] sovereignty. Whoever controls the information controls the world," a representative for Rostelecom reportedly said.

India-US Defense Deal: Predator Drone Aircraft Project Hastened, Report Says

International Business Times

India and the United States are reportedly pushing forward a deal for the supply of Predator drone aircraft in order to complete the project before U.S. President Barack Obama leaves office early next year. The aim is to complete the main process in the next few months," Reuters quoted a government official in New Delhi -- speaking on condition of anonymity -- as saying. He was referring to the country's request for 22 Predator Guardian drones -- to be used for military surveillance -- that was made in June this year. India is apparently rushing to conclude the deal under the Obama administration as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shares cordial relations with the American president after several personal interactions since the former took office in 2014. India serves as a strategic partner in the U.S. mission to tackle terrorism in the region while Washington has replaced Moscow as the top arms supplier to New Delhi.

Automated Data Science & Machine Learning: An Interview with the Auto-sklearn Team

#artificialintelligence

KDnuggets recently ran an Automated Data Science and Machine Learning blog contest, which garnered numerous entries and lots of appreciation for the winning posts and a pair of honorable mentions. The winning post, titled Contest Winner: Winning the AutoML Challenge with Auto-sklearn, written by Matthias Feurer, Aaron Klein, and Frank Hutten, all of the University of Freiburg, provides an overview of Auto-sklearn, an open-source Python tool that automatically determines effective machine learning pipelines for classification and regression datasets. The project is built around the successful scikit-learn library and won the recent AutoML challenge. Given the popularity of the post, we asked the authors if they would be interested in answering a few followup questions on themselves, their project, and automated data science in general. What follows is the result of this conversation. What if we start by having you introduce the members of the team and provide a little information on each of your backgrounds?
