45 digital health startups that raised money in Q3 2016

For the third quarter of 2016, MobiHealthNews tracked just shy of 600 million in deals. While a few large deals anchored the quarter, the majority of the 45 we tracked this quarter were small; only seven were more than 20 million, most were 10 million or less. For this analysis, we've omitted investments in joint ventures like Verily and Sanofi's OnDuo as well as grant funding. Read on for the 45 deals in the digital health space we tracked throughout the quarter, listed in order from largest to smallest amount of funding. Canada-based wearable technology company Thalmic Labs, which makes the connected armband Myo, raised 120 million in Series B funding in a round led by Intel Capital, the Amazon Alexa Fund and Fidelity Investments Canada.

How to Steal an AI

In the burgeoning field of computer science known as machine learning, engineers often refer to the artificial intelligences they create as "black box" systems: Once a machine learning engine has been trained from a collection of example data to perform anything from facial recognition to malware detection, it can take in queries--Whose face is that? Is this app safe?--and spit out answers without anyone, not even its creators, fully understanding the mechanics of the decision-making inside that box. But researchers are increasingly proving that even when the inner workings of those machine learning engines are inscrutable, they aren't exactly secret. In fact, they've found that the guts of those black boxes can be reverse-engineered and even fully reproduced--stolen, as one group of researchers puts it--with the very same methods used to create them. In a paper they released earlier this month titled "Stealing Machine Learning Models via Prediction APIs," a team of computer scientists at Cornell Tech, the Swiss institute EPFL in Lausanne, and the University of North Carolina detail how they were able to reverse engineer machine learning-trained AIs based only on sending them queries and analyzing the responses.


U.S. court reinstates Apple 120 million patent win over Samsung

NEW YORK A federal appeals court on Friday reinstated a 120 million jury award for Apple Inc (AAPL.O) against Samsung (005930.KS), marking the latest twist in the fierce patent war between the world's top smartphone manufacturers. The court said that there was substantial evidence for the jury verdict related to Samsung's infringement of Apple patents on its slide-to-unlock and autocorrect features, as well as quick links, which automatically turn information like addresses and phone numbers into links. Friday's decision was made by the full slate of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. In an 8-3 ruling, the judges said that a previous panel of the same court should not have overturned the verdict last February. The three-judge panel did not follow U.S. Supreme Court limits on the scope of its review, because it examined evidence outside the record of the case, the decision said.

Uber, Lyft ordered to stop driving in Philadelphia

Daniel Lélis Baggio started his work in computer vision through medical image processing at InCor (Instituto do Coração Heart Institute) in São Paulo, where he worked with intra-vascular ultrasound image segmentation. Since then, he has focused on GPGPU and ported the segmentation algorithm to work with NVIDIA's CUDA. He has also dived into six degrees of freedom head tracking with a natural user interface group through a project called ehci (http://code.google.com/p/ehci/). He now works for the Brazilian Air Force. Shervin Emami (born in Iran) taught himself electronics and hobby robotics during his early teens in Australia.


Google DeepMind teams up with London hospitals to put machine learning to work against head and neck cancers

Google's machine learning subsidiary DeepMind has kicked off a new research partnership with the radiotherapy department at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a provider organization that specializes in cancer treatment. DeepMind and clinicians in UCLH's radiotherapy team are exploring whether machine learning methods can reduce the amount of time it takes to plan radiotherapy treatment for cancers of the head and neck. To that end, 1 in 75 men and 1 in 150 women will be diagnosed with oral cancer during their lifetime, and oral cavity cancer has risen by 92 percent since the 1970s, DeepMind said. Head and neck cancer in general affects more than 11,000 patients in the U.K. alone each year, the firm added. "Advances in treatment such as radiotherapy have improved survival rates, but because of the high number of delicate structures concentrated in this area of the body, clinicians have to plan treatment extremely carefully to ensure none of the vital nerves or organs are damaged," DeepMind said.


Virtual reality robots could help teleport juries to crime scenes

Juries are seldom allowed to visit crime scenes. There are exceptions, usually in difficult, high-profile murder cases such as the O.J Simpson trial in 1995 in the US and the Jill Dando murder trial in 2001 in the UK. But asking jurors to become fact finders in this way comes with myriad problems, from possible biases to the logistical and security challenges of taking them to the crime scene. A site visit by the Dando jury needed a convoy of five vehicles to transport the jurors, lawyers, judge and their police escorts to the scene, passing through police barricades surrounded by neighbours, journalists and other spectators. It became a media spectacle.
