DOLDA - a regularized supervised topic model for high-dimensional multi-class regression

During the last decades more and more textual data have become available, creating a growing need to statistically analyze large amounts of textual data. The hugely popular Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model introduced by Blei et al. (2003) is a generative probability model where each document is summarized by a set of latent semantic themes, often called topics; formally, a topic is a probability distribution over the vocabulary. An estimated LDA model is therefore a compressed latent representation of the documents. LDA is a mixed membership model where each document is a mixture of topics, where each word (token) in a document belongs to a single topic. The basic LDA model is unsupervised, i.e. the topics are learned solely from the words in the documents without access to document labels. In many situations there are also other information we would like to incorporate in modeling a corpus of documents. A common example is when we have labeled documents, such as ratings of movies together with a movie description, illness category in medical journals or the location of the identified bug together with bug reports. In these situation, one can use a so called supervised topic model to find the semantic structure in the documents that are related to the class of interest. One of the first approaches to supervised topic models was proposed by Mcauliffe and Blei (2008).

Funded by a 10 million (US 12.3 million) grant from the Leverhulme Trust, the centre's express aim is to ensure AI is used to benefit humanity. Opening the new centre, Hawking said it was not possible to predict what might be achieved with AI. "Perhaps with the tools of this new technological revolution, we will be able to undo some of the damage done to the natural world by the last one - industrialisation. "And surely we will aim to finally eradicate disease and poverty. Every aspect of our lives will be transformed.

Hawking warns AI could be either the best or worst thing to happen to humanity

Professor Stephen Hawking has warned that artificial intelligence could develop a will of its own that is in conflict with that of humanity. It could herald dangers like powerful autonomous weapons and ways for the few to oppress the many, he said, as he called for more research in the area. But if sufficient research is done to avoid the risks, it could help in humanity's aims to "finally eradicate disease and poverty", he added. He was speaking in Cambridge at the launch of The Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, which will explore the implications of the rapid development of artificial intelligence. All great achievements of civilisation, from learning to master fire to learning to grow food to understanding the cosmos, were down to human intelligence, he said.


This disinfection robot can light the way to cleaner hospitals

A robot being developed by Blue Ocean Robotics uses ultraviolet light to disinfect rooms. The Danish company is targeting the product first at hospitals, where there's a high danger of patients contracting infections. In a 2011 study, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said patients acquired 722,000 infections during treatment at health-care facilities in the U.S. that year and 75,000 of those patients died in the hospital. It's a problem that Blue Ocean hopes to resolve with its UV disinfection robot. The robot uses large ultraviolet lamps to kill bacteria.

What is it that makes us worry about artificial intelligence (AI)? The White House is the latest to weigh in on the possible threats posed by clever machines in a report last week. Part of the reason for this concentration on severe, existential threats from AI comes from misplaced attention on the possibility that such technology could develop consciousness. The article entitled "Advancing the Strategic Messages Affecting Robot Trust Effect: The Dynamic of User- and Robot-Generated Content on Human-Robot Trust and Interaction Outcomes" examines the impact of Strategic Messages Affecting Robot Trust (SMART). The researchers conducted two experiments in which they studied the effects of either user-generated information or robot-generated content delivered in the pre-interaction stage on human-robot trust and interaction outcomes. "As human robot interactions become more prevalent in both our personal and professional lives, it becomes increasingly more important that we understand how to work together most effectively," says Editor-in-Chief Brenda K. Wiederhold, PhD, MBA, BCB, BCN, Interactive Media Institute, San Diego, California and Virtual Reality Medical Institute, Brussels, Belgium. "Drawing on lessons learned from previous animal-human interaction training prior to our engagement may serve to create improved trust and communications."
