AI judge predicts human rights rulings with 79% accuracy rate
A group of researchers from the University College London (UCL), University of Sheffield, and University of Pennsylvania, created an Artificial Intelligence system to judge 584 human rights cases and had released its findings recently. The cases analyzed by the AI method were previously heard at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and were equally divided into violation and non-violation cases to prevent bias. Basing its judgment on the case text, the AI judge managed to predict the decisions on the cases with 79% accuracy. That means, it concurred with the decisions of human judges 8 out of 10 times.
Cause and Treatment of Phantom Limb Pain in Amputees Discovered
Scientists have found why amputees feel the sensation of phantom limb pain. It is due to this reorganization pain occurs in the amputated limbs of a vast majority of amputees. The researchers also found a proposed way of treating the affliction through the use of artificial intelligence techniques. The researchers used a brain-machine interface to come up with this conclusion. They trained a group of ten amputees so they could control a robotic arm from their brain. The research team found learning to control the prosthetic through the amputated arm resulted in pain.

Look at the brilliant plumage of tropical birds, the diverse pattern and shape of leaves, the cunning stratagems of microbes, the dazzling profusion of climbing, crawling, flying, swimming things. Look at the "grandeur" of life, the "endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful," as Darwin put it. Isn't that enough to persuade you? Ah, but isn't all this wonder simply the product of the blind fumbling of Darwinian evolution, that mindless machine which takes random variation and sieves it by natural selection? You don't have to be a benighted creationist, nor even a believer in divine providence, to argue that Darwin's astonishing theory doesn't fully explain why nature is so marvelously, endlessly inventive.

UBS Joins AI Fray with Amazon Partnership
"The holy grail of a chatbot or virtual assistant is to help you adjust your behavior, telling you when to save more or spend in order to reach certain goals," said Lex Sokolin, global director of fintech research for Autonomous Research. Could UBS clients soon be serviced by voice-controlled AI? Maybe not yet, but a new pilot program between the bank and Amazon's Alexa service is testing the frontiers of both science fiction and wealth management. UBS' partnership with Amazon will enable clients and non-clients of the bank to get answers to financial and economic questions, ranging from what is inflation to how the U.S. economy is faring. It's the latest example of how wealth management firms are experimenting with new technologies such as data analytics and artificial intelligence to expand or reinvent the business.

"We thought it would be funny to make a robot that could do the same thing I am doing with my son," says Vogt, who is at the Freiburg University of Mining and Technology in Germany. So Vogt and his colleagues brought an industrial robot arm to the lab. Like a child playing for the first time, the robot – equipped with a Kinect depth camera – observed two experienced humans wearing motion tracking tags as they built a Lego rocket.

No need to shoot down drones! Many of them can now be hijacked
A security researcher has devised a method of hijacking a wide variety of radio- controlled airplanes, helicopters, cars, boats and other devices that use a popular wireless transmission technology. The attack was developed by Jonathan Andersson, manager of the Advanced Security Research Group at Trend Micro DVLabs, and targets a "wideband, frequency-agile 2.4GHz signal protocol" called DSMx. This protocol is used in radio-control (R/C) toys, including in drones, that are owned by millions of users. Andersson's attack exploits weaknesses in DSMx and was presented in detail Wednesday at the PacSec security conference in Tokyo. The researcher built a device that he dubbed Icarus, using off-the-shelf electronic components and software-defined radio (SDR).
