GPU's Role in Artificial Intelligence Advances Featured at Conference By Wayne Rash Posted 2016-10-26 Print NEWS ANALYSIS: The confluence of big data, massively powerful computing resources and advanced algorithms is bringing new artificial intelligence capabilities to scientific research. WASHINGTON, D.C.--Massively parallel supercomputing hardware and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms are being harnessed to deliver powerful new research tools in science and medicine, according to Dr. France A. Córdova, director of the National Science Foundation. Córdova spoke Oct. 26 at the GPU Technology Conference organized by Nvidia, a company that got its start making video cards for PCs and gaming systems and now manufactures advanced graphics processors for high-performance servers and supercomputers. Córdova, who is directing long-term research in AI at the NSF, said the research there is being used already in the Cancer Moonshot project currently spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden, whose son Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. The Cancer Moonshot is a major effort to focus resources and funding on the fight to cure cancer on a scale similar to the original mission by NASA to land on the moon.

In a lecture at the University of Cambridge this week, Stephen Hawking made the bold claim that the creation of artificial intelligence will be "either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity". The talk was celebrating the opening of the new Leverhulme Centre of the Future of Intelligence, where some of the best minds in science will try to answer questions about the future of robots and artificial intelligence - something Hawking says we need to do a lot more of. "We spend a great deal of time studying history," Hawking told the lecture, "which, let's face it, is mostly the history of stupidity." But despite all our time spent looking back at past errors, we seem to make the same mistakes over and over again. "So it's a welcome change that people are studying instead the future of intelligence," he explained.

The project is an endeavor by the UBS Wealth Innovation Lab in Zurich, led by Dave Bruno. In cooperation with Amazon, the U.S. online warehouse, UBS wants to take its financial expertise to the client, the bank said in a statement on Thursday. The two companies are linking artificial intelligence with digital voice recognition. The laboratory in Zurich also has a project running with nViso, a Lausanne-based software company. The tool – dubbed «Emotionadvisor» – is designed to detect the wishes of customers simply by analyzing their facial expressions.

Even though the market for chatbots is still young, Europe seems to be already lagging behind. Ethical questions, data privacy, the fear of failure, and market uncertainty are only a few issues Europeans have. While the whole world is discussing the commercialization of artificial intelligence (A.I.) and chatbots and how the market is going to grow exponentially, Europe is once again taking the seat of the quiet, conservative observer for several reasons. One of the greatest concerns involves the fear of A.I. contesting with humans for their employment. Dr. Stuart Armstrong, an expert in the field of A.I. and an Oxford researcher, pointed out that these concerns are still highly hypothetical as we are still far away from the point where robots and A.I. will become smart enough to fully replace humans. Furthermore, research in 2011 by the International Federation of Robotics found that one million industrial robots powered by A.I. actually created nearly three million jobs for humans.

Apple has revealed its completely redesigned MacBook Pro, the computer that it hopes can put an end to worries that about its future. The company unveiled the laptop as part of an event at its California headquarters. It also showed off a new TV app – but didn't update any of its desktop computers, as many had hoped, and showed off no new categories of products. The new computer is thinner, lighter and differently shaped from the old MacBook Pro. But the main change is the new screen that's built into the keyboard.

Lying in a bath in Bristol is a robotic scavenger, gorging itself on its surroundings. It's able to get just enough energy to take in another stomach full of food, before ejecting its waste and repeating the process. This is no ordinary robot. Developed by a Bristol-based collaboration, this robot imitates the life of salps – squishy tube-shaped marine organisms. Salps have an opening at each end, one for food to enter and one for waste to leave.

I decided to go a step further and put together an overview of the Irish Artificial Intelligence industry. I used the companies on the map to form the basis of the findings covered in this blog. I use the phrase'Artificial Intelligence' as an umbrella term to categorise the industry.
