The Artificial Intelligence Startup Battle where the jury is an algorithm keeps on traveling around the world! We are glad to announce our next stop: São Paulo, Brazil, on December 9, 2016. This will be the third edition of a series of very exciting battles, where five AI startups compete with each other and are judged by a Machine Learning algorithm, with no human involvement. The world's premiere Artificial Intelligence Startup Battle took place in Valencia, Spain, last March 2016, when Telefónica Open Future_ and BigML presented PreSeries to the world. The reaction of the audience was extremely positive!

Big data in ranching and animal husbandry
Another big part of the food supply comes from ranches and farms that raise and slaughter various livestock. While ranching is sometimes bundled with agriculture, I discussed farming in Big Data in Agriculture, so we'll focus on ranching this time around. Somewhat surprising is that big data usage in ranching appears more limited than in farming. That said, there are a number of novel uses of technology and data in animal husbandry. At a high level, the goals of ranching and farming are the same as any business: increase yields and lower costs.
Will smart cities need AI to truly flourish?
A Deutsche Telekom official says artificial intelligence (AI) will be needed to break smart city data out of its silos. As reported by Mobile World Live, thoughts about smart city evolution appeared on the blog of Claudia Nemat, the Deutsche Telekom (DT) board member who oversees Technology & Innovation Europe. In her piece, Nemat described current smart city practices as trapping data from sensors in an isolated "landlocked lake." But as sensors proliferate at blinding speed in global smart cities, the rivers of data being produced will turn into oceans. This will be complicated by the multiple digital platforms running simultaneously in each city.
This Intelligent 3D Printer Is Building Big, Beautiful Structures
Imagine one day walking into a gorgeous structure--like LA's famous Walt Disney Concert Hall--only to discover it was designed by a computer system and constructed by automated robotic arms. Ai Build, a London-based startup, aims to pave the way to 3D printing on large scales. The company is equipping industrial-grade Kuka robotic arms with artificial intelligence and "3D printing guns" to 3D print large structures that focus on maximizing efficiency with labor and materials. Founder and CEO Daghan Cam dreamed up the technology while considering traditional commercial construction and wondering what a more efficient and automated process might look like. In October, the company partnered with engineering consulting firm Arup Engineers to debut the 3D printed "Daedalus Pavilion" at the GPU Technology Conference in Amsterdam.
Alphabet Pushes Out Leaders of Drone-Delivery Project
Alphabet Inc. pushed out two managers on its drone-delivery project amid infighting on its team, according to people familiar with the situation, casting the program's future in uncertainty and marking the latest setback for a Google sister company. Alphabet, Google's parent, has been developing delivery drones in its research arm since 2012 with the hopes of transforming logistics. But the drone project--dubbed Project Wing--has had a bumpy ride, with its original head departing in 2014. Alphabet last month pushed out the project's chief, Dave Vos, and its top commercial executive, Sean Mullaney, in large part because of conflict between the group's engineers and its commercial team, according to the people familiar with the matter. It also issued notices to several other Project Wing workers, giving them 90 days to find other positions within Alphabet, one former employee said.
Bias in ML, and Teaching AI
Yesterday I gave a super duper high level 12 minutes presentation about some issues of bias in AI. I should emphasize (if it's not clear) that this is something I am not an expert in; most of what I know is by reading great papers by other people (there is a completely non-academic sample at the end of this post). Why These AI Startups Joined Salesforce, Amazon, and Uber
Say you're a giant company that's heard about a fancy "new" technology called artificial intelligence and you're interested in adding some cutting-edge data crunching muscle to your business. Contrary to what the artificial intelligence-hype cycle might suggest, just adding popular buzzwords like "machine learning" to your vernacular isn't as easy as hooking a smartphone to a laptop. At the Machine Learning and the Market for Intelligence conference this week put on by the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, several founders behind artificial intelligence startups that have been acquired by industry heavyweights like Salesforce.com crm, Uber, and Amazon amzn shared lessons they've learned since joining the big-time corporate world. Richard Socher, the founder of the A.I. startup MetaMind that was swallowed by Salesforce in April, explained on a panel what he's learned since joining the cloud software giant and becoming its chief scientist. Socher said he was pleased with the research that his small team worked on with two types of A.I. techniques called computer vision, in which software can learn to recognize images in pictures, and natural language processing, in which software learns to recognize text.
