5 UK start-ups changing business with AI - Computer Business Review
CBR looks at five UK start-ups which have been noticeably creating innovations and acquisitions in the AI market. BenevolentAI, which is based in London, is responsible for applying the AI technology in the human health and bioscience sectors. In 2014, the company collected a total of £40 million in funding from both its existing investors and Woodford Investment Management LLP, which was then an incoming investor. The company is currently focused on diseases, such as neurodegeneration, orphan diseases and rare cancers, but have said it remains flexible in case any other opportunities are to arise, due to its artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. BenevolentAI uses complex AI to look for patterns in scientific literature, already having managed to identify two potential drug targets for Alzheimer's with the use of AI.

Robot solves Rubik's Cube in less than a second Solving a Rubik's Cube is an impressive feat by itself, but now, a robot can do it in record time, cracking the 3D puzzle about 10 times faster than the human who holds the world record. In just over half of a second (0.637 seconds), the Sub1 Reloaded robot made each side of the Rubik's Cube show a single color. This breaks the previous record of 0.887 seconds achieved by an earlier version of the same machine using a different processor. German technology company Infineon staged the record attempt at the Electronica trade fair in Munich this week, as a way to highlight its self-driving-car technology. The company provided one of the Sub1 Reloaded robot's microchips.

It is no doubt that the sub-field of machine learning / artificial intelligence has increasingly gained more popularity in the past couple of years. As Big Data is the hottest trend in the tech industry at the moment, machine learning is incredibly powerful to make predictions or calculated suggestions based on large amounts of data. Web Summit 2016: From AI to the US election
Last week, over 50,000 people from 166 countries made their way to Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal. With 21 stages dedicated to different topics and sectors, there was never a lack of choice; however, despite the huge variety of talks, several themes repeatedly emerged. At Web Summit, the narrative was less around what is currently possible and more around managing our expectations for the near future. Yes, artificial intelligence has huge possibilities, but we are still decades from having an emotional AI, said Gary Marcus, CEO at Geometric Intelligence, during the Future of the Worker panel. Rana el Kallouby, CEO of Affectiva, echoed Marcus' sentiment and reminded us to think of the inputs as we build AI solutions.
Samsung seeks redemption with artificial intelligence-infused Galaxy S8 phone
Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co. plans to equip its next Galaxy S smartphones with a Siri-like digital assistant, seeking to make a comeback after the global debacle that precipitated the death of its flawed Note 7 lineup. Samsung, which last month acquired US-based artificial intelligence software company Viv Labs Inc., said the Galaxy S8 slated for next year will come with AI-enabled features "significantly differentiated" from those of Apple Inc.'s Siri or Google, executive vice president Rhee In-jong told reporters. Those services now offer up potentially useful information from the weather to flight times based on user activity. The flagship Galaxy S line will prove crucial to salvaging Samsung's reputation in the wake of the fiasco surrounding a Note 7 device prone to bursting into flame. The recall and eventual cessation of the line is estimated to cost upwards of $6 billion and pushed profits at its mobile division to a record low in the September quarter.

Autonomous Delivery Robots to Hit Redwood City, Calif., Streets in December
Various reports have surfaced in the past year about unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) delivering packages and take-out to your door -- but some options are closer to the ground, literally. And one Silicon Valley city is jumping to test out this new technology, considered the newest frontier in automated delivery. Redwood City, Calif., recently passed a city resolution (PDF) for a nine-month pilot program in which Starship Technologies works with parcel delivery, grocery and food delivery firms who will use its autonomous robots to carry out the deliveries. As a demonstration for the city, the robot delivered a box of cookies from a local bakery. The company has run pilot programs in London; Düsseldorf, Germany; Bern, Switzerland; and Washington, D.C.
