Apple's iPhones and iPads are losing the battle against Android devices. That's according to a new study by mobile diagnostics firms Blancco Technology Group (BTG), which claims that Apple's devices are less reliable and experienced a bigger failure rate than their Android counterpart, driven by bugs in the iOS 10 update. For the purposes of the report the word "failure" refers to any number of problem including instances of apps crashing, connection difficulties and overheating. About 62 per cent of iOS devices suffered performance failures in the third quarter of 2016 compared with 47 per cent of Android devices, the report found. The iPhone 6 was the main culprit with the highest failure rate of 13 per cent.

LEUVEN, BELGIUM – Belgium famously produces hundreds of different beers, but that is nothing compared to the varieties of yeast used to make them -- around 30,000 are kept on ice at just one laboratory by scientists seeking the perfect ingredient for the perfect brew. A team from the University of Leuven and life sciences research institute VIB are examining and cross-breeding yeast strains, adding modern genetics to a search for brewing perfection that dates back centuries. "We're … using robots to cross different yeast like farmers have been doing with cattle and livestock for centuries," said genetics professor Kevin Verstrepen. "We're now doing the same with yeast on a massive scale, making millions of new strains or variants of yeast and testing which are the better ones." By analyzing the chemical and genetic basis of a beer's flavour and aroma, the scientists say they are breeding yeast strains that promote the best characteristics for a good beer.

Death by selfie sounds like a scene from one of the Final Destination movies but, apparently, it's actually a thing. In 2014, 15 people died while snapping a selfie, followed by 39 people in 2015, and 73 in the first eight months of 2016. So what, if anything, can be done about this escalating trend? That's what a new research project carried out by researchers in India wants to find out. "There was a news article that was circulated in my research group about a death by selfie during summer 2016," Ponnurangam Kumaraguru, an assistant professor at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi, told Digital Trends.

He says humanity won't survive another 1,000 years on Earth because of, you know, the usual suspects -- climate change, nukes, robots. Hawking, speaking earlier this week at Oxford University Union, says our best chance for survival as a species is to leave the only home we've ever known and establish colonies on other planets. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 or 10,000 years," Hawking said in the speech, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

The Cambridgeshire farm used to test Amazon's new delivery drones has become a heavily guarded site that's shrouded in paranoia and secrecy. A group of photographers visiting the testing ground has filmed the moment they were turned away from by security guards, who they say were equipped with ear pieces, binoculars and radios. One of the photographers described the confrontation as'hostile' and said that it was like'some kind of cult'. In the footage capturing the exchange last Thursday, one security guard, who was wearing a pair of binoculars around his neck, asked the photographers to leave while standing next to a private property sign. He refused to confirm or deny whether he was security or answer any questions.
