Investors believe it is'inevitable' that artificial intelligence will destroy millions of jobs and that governments are unprepared for such an impact, according to a new survey. Artificial intelligence (AI), or the process by which computers or robots take on tasks that need human intelligence, is one of the key themes of this week's Web Summit in Lisbon. The poll among 224 venture capitalists attending the conference showed 53 percent believed AI would destroy millions of jobs and 93 percent saw governments as unprepared for this. We sat down with the pair to ask them to justify their even more utopian vision for the future of travel. The company's latest pitch video demonstrates this, showing how a route between Dubai and Abu Dhabi would work. Over the past two years I've noticed a steady stream of articles in the mainstream press and business journals centred on the themes of a) the dangers of machine learning 1 2 or b) the limitations of machine learning 3 4. Many of these articles refer to incidents where machine learning initiatives have echoed and exasperated our own biases, prejudices and (frankly racist) behaviours 5. Others have focused on their limitations with providing the sorts of'informed, idiosyncratic' recommendations that humans find effortless. However, for those of us that work in the field of predictive analytics where many of the algorithms at the heart of these stories are routinely used, 'machine learning' is nothing new. In fact, many of us are pretty bemused by the fact that the media has leapt on the phrase'machine learning' to stand for everything from multivariate statistics, association modelling and rule induction to operational research, cognitive computing and artificial intelligence. Rather like the word'algorithm' it's being used to cover pretty much any situation where software generates predictions in the form of risk scores, recommendations, estimates or classifications.

It had been three months since Roman Mazurenko, Kuyda's closest friend, had died. Kuyda had spent that time gathering up his old text messages, setting aside the ones that felt too personal, and feeding the rest into a neural network built by developers at her artificial intelligence startup. She had struggled with whether she was doing the right thing by bringing him back this way. At times it had even given her nightmares. But ever since Mazurenko's death, Kuyda had wanted one more chance to speak with him. A message blinked onto the screen. "You have one of the most interesting puzzles in the world in your hands," it said. Born in Belarus in 1981, Roman Mazurenko was the only child of Sergei, an engineer, and Victoria, a landscape architect. They remember him as an unusually serious child; when he was 8 he wrote a letter to his descendents declaring his most cherished values: wisdom and justice. In family photos, Mazurenko roller-skates, sails a boat, and climbs trees. Average in height, with a mop of chestnut hair, he is almost always smiling.

In an enormous grocery store in northern France, the lights above the aisles aren't all they seem to be. They look ordinary--more than a mile and a half of fixtures exuding bright light, folded into a grid overhead--but they're actually flickering faster than the human eye can see. The unique patterns each individual section of lighting emits are a 21st-century twist on Morse code, meant not for people, but for the cameras on their phones. If shoppers grant the store's app access to their smartphone's front-facing lens, the phone can watch for the lights and use the pulses to pinpoint its location. Doing so allows the app to plot the best routes for shopping lists, tracking people as they travel through the store.

What some considered to be science fiction only a few years ago, AI is edging closer to reality as decades of research, combined with advances in compute power, memory, storage, network connectivity, sensors, and the software that unites them all, is poised to enable new classes of intelligent predictive analytics. These innovations will bring benefits to multiple industries, and to society as a whole in the way we lead our everyday lives.


'Neuromorphic' chip modeled after the human brain aims to bring smarts to computers

The dream of creating intelligent computers has inspired the development of exotic chips based on the structure of the brain, which operates in mysterious ways. Some researchers are making such chips from components found in today's computers. Using components pulled off store shelves, researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have made a chip for intelligent computers that can learn. The chips are structured to discover patterns through probabilities and association, helping with decision making. The researchers are using off-the-shelf, reprogrammable circuits called FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) to simulate the way neurons and synapses in a brain operate.

Machine learning has been one of the most exciting development we have had since the internet and its subsequent spread through smart phones. Andrew Ng likens artificial intelligence (AI: term can be used vice versa with machine learning as of this moment that AI system learns from data, but this hasn't always been the case) to electricity; that AI will be pervasive, everywhere and transformative in the way we do things. Why would it be so transformative to the way we do things? Its simply that before advent of AI, everything we built were not even stupid, they had no thoughts and take no actions, its people who gotta make all the decisions for them. My own first practical exposure to building a practical AI system was when I started working as a wind energy analyst.


Artificial Intelligence, Robotics Top List of Technologies in Need of Better Governance

The research forms part of a survey of nearly 900 experts that is used to compile the Forum's Global Risks report. When asked which emerging technologies need better governance, two technologies were clear outliers: artificial intelligence and robotics, followed by biotechnologies. The third technology most in need of governance is energy capture, storage and transmission. Other technologies in the top 10 are blockchain and distributed ledger (4), which has been touted as having a game-changing effect on industries, from banking and financial services to agriculture. Following this is geo-engineering (5), which is often seen as a response to climate change but whose effectiveness and potential negative side effects remain largely unknown.
