The machine SK Planet built understands how to match clothes and sizes, and has a sense of what's considered stylish, as it's learned to copy looks from photos of outfits put together by big stylists. For online retail, this means that many of the headaches surrounding what consumers want might be alleviated. This new tool comes on on the heels of other recent machine learning news.

Recently we've been participating at Days of Computer Science, organized by the Museum of Post and Telecommunications and the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The project brought together pupils and students from around the country and hopefully showed them what computer science is mostly about. Most children would think programming is just typing lines of code. It's a way of thinking, a way to solve problems creatively and efficiently. And even better, computer science can be used for solving a great variety of problems.
Will I lose my job to artificial intelligence?
The short answer is yes. Most economists think the answer is no, because in the past automation hasn't caused lasting unemployment. They call it the Luddite Fallacy because the Luddites, the people who went around smashing up weaving machines during the Industrial Revolution, were wrong about the effect of automation โ at least to the extent that they were making a broad economic argument. I think the economists are guilty of the Reverse Luddite Fallacy, which is to say that because automation hasn't caused lasting unemployment in the past it can't do so in the future. It's different this time because in previous rounds of unemployment machines have replaced our muscle jobs while in future rounds they're going to replace our cognitive skills.

Machine-Learning Algorithm Quantifies Gender Bias in Astronomy
Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, estimate that, as a result of gender bias, papers whose first authors are women receive around 10% fewer citations than do those that are first-authored by men. Gender disparities in citation patterns have been documented across science before. But researchers have not previously tried to quantify how much of the differences are the result of gender bias. For instance, men and women may publish different types of papers; women may work in different scientific fields, and may hold less-senior positions. But the new paper, which has not yet been peer-reviewed and was posted on the arXiv preprint server on October 27, tries to account and correct for these factors.

Britain's BMI Research hosted a seminar recently where it tried to get the hype and bluster and provide some insight into the prospects of computerised/robot/autonomous vehicles. Technologies including AI, bots, drones and robots will lead to the automation of large parts of the global workforce More than 861,000 public sector jobs could be lost by 2030 through automation, according to a study that comes as a further blow after hundreds of thousands of UK public sector jobs disappeared following the government's austerity cuts during and after the recession. However, it has to be said, that as more and more governments around the world experiment with Universal Basic Income (UBI) programs, including Scotland who may even start trails next week, the news doesn't come as a complete surprise. The research conducted by Oxford University and Deloitte, the business advisory firm, found that the 1.3m administrative jobs across the public sector had the highest chance of being automated. New blockchain DNS system would put an end to DDoS attacks But, following on from the London Borough of Enfields move to replace some customer services clerks with a bot called "Amelia," even teachers, police officers and social workers could be replaced, at least in part, allowing the government to either free up more staff for frontline work or reduce the number of workers on the payroll. The research is included in Deloitte's State of the State report, which analyses the state of public finances and the challenges facing public services. Deloitte's previous work has shown that all sectors will be affected by automation in the next two decades, with 74% of jobs in transportation and storage, 59% in wholesale and retail trades and 56% in manufacturing having a high chance of being automated.
