Lip-reading is notoriously difficult, depending as much on context and knowledge of language as it does on visual clues. But researchers are showing that machine learning can be used to discern speech from silent video clips more effectively than professional lip-readers can. In one project, a team from the University of Oxford's Department of Computer Science has developed a new artificial-intelligence system called LipNet. As Quartz reported, its system was built on a data set known as GRID, which is made up of well-lit, face-forward clips of people reading three-second sentences. Each sentence is based on a string of words that follow the same pattern.

It's hard to not get swept up in all the hype surrounding AI at the moment. The more you research the seemingly limitless potential, the grander the scope of your ambition becomes. At first, you automate part of a workflow only to inevitably be struck with the fact you could automate the whole worker or even the entire company! Before you know it, you are positive your AI could stage a convincing coup of a small island nation -- under the right political conditions, of course. Before we can develop compelling AI solutions, however, it is important to check our technical hubris and consider some very limiting factors to AI in its current stage.

The State of European Tech report points to the success of tech-based businesses or acquisitions across the continent, but at the core of this success is deep tech. When it comes to advances in AI, machine learning, VR and AR, drones, robotics and 3D printing, Europe is either leading the way, or is on par with the likes of the US. Since the start of 2015, $2.3 billion has been invested into deep tech in Europe and 2016 is on track for $1 billion – four times the amount in 2011. Even Norway, the lowest ranking country of those studied, has received $56 million in the past five years. These figures also don't represent the recent acquisition of Skyscanner by China's Ctrip travel firm.
