Thanks to the likes of Google, Amazon, and Facebook, the terms artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have become much more widespread than ever before. They are often used interchangeably and promise all sorts from smarter home appliances to robots taking our jobs. But while AI and machine learning are very much related, they are not quite the same thing. AI is a branch of computer science attempting to build machines capable of intelligent behaviour, while Stanford University defines machine learning as "the science of getting computers to act without being explicitly programmed". You need AI researchers to build the smart machines, but you need machine learning experts to make them truly intelligent.

You probably caught video a few weeks back of Alexa speaking through Big Mouth Billy Bass, a singing fish that got popular in the late 1990s. If you haven't seen it yet, take a moment to watch and enjoy. The animatronic fish is a good reminder that Amazon's Alexa does not just come in speakers like Amazon Echo or Echo Dot. The Alexa Voice Service (AVS) can be used to put Alexa inside a wide range of devices, and since it's in the cloud, Alexa can operate without dependency on a local device for computing power. With Amazon deep learning services, the Lex bot framework, and a smarter Alexa Skills Kit announced at AWS re:Invent this week, people can expect to see and interact with Alexa in places way beyond an Echo or animatronic fish.

What if the computer algorithms could tell more compelling stories than journalists, writers or business analysts? Well, this is increasingly becoming a reality. A new generation of Big Data tools are being put to automate story telling. The ideas behind this application of analytics were first put to use generating automated news reports, covering sports and financial stories. Take the recent Wimbledon tennis championships as an example.

This is the 2-part blog version of a talk I've given at DOAG Conference this week. With SQL you're comfortable (an expert, probably), you know how to get and manipulate your data, no nesting of subselects has you scared;-).

My background is in fincial modeling but I have a lot of experience with relatiol data bases, working with large data sets, building dashboards and data visualization. I'm interested in breaking away from the spreadsheet and diving head first into R, Python and all the fasciting avenues this field has to offer. I hope to learn as much as I can and contribute what I can while becoming part of the data community.

OpenAI, the billion-dollar San Francisco artificial intelligence lab backed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, just unveiled a new virtual world. It's called Universe, and it's a virtual world like no other. It's a place where AI can learn to do just about anything. Other AI labs have built similar worlds where AI agents can learn on their own. Researchers at the University of Alberta offer the Atari Learning Environment, where agents can learn to play old Atari games like Breakout and Space Invaders. Microsoft offers Malmo, based on the game Minecraft.
