Snapchat update brings group messages as it looks to take on chat apps like WhatsApp
Snapchat has finally launched group conversations, letting the app take on competitors like WhatsApp. The company will finally let people talk to a group of friends – up to 16 of them – rather than starting individual conversations with a range of different people. The move is perhaps one of its biggest launches in recent years. The company has been gradually looking to become more of a centre for people to have conversations, something that was severely limited by its inability to have group conversations like competitors including WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Udacity adds 14 hiring partners as AI, VR and self-driving talent wars heat up
Udacity is positioned perfectly to benefit from the rush on talent in a number of growing areas of interest among tech companies and startups. The online education platform has added 14 new hiring partners across its Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Self-Driving Car Engineer and Virtual Reality Developer Nanodegree programs, as well as in its Predictive Analytics Nanodegree, including standouts like Bosch, Harma, Slack, Intel, Amazon Alexa and Samsung. That brings the total number of hiring partners for Udacity to over 30, which means a lot of potential soft landings for graduates of its nanodegree programs. The nanodegree offered by Udacity is its own original form of accreditation, which is based on a truncated field of study that spans months, rather than years, and allows students to direct the pace of their own learning. It also all takes place online, so students can potentially learn from anywhere. For Udacity, hiring partners help prove the value of their program to potential students, as they're effectively votes of confidence made by exactly the kinds of companies where students are looking to get jobs.
This Is The Hidden Challenge In The Future Of Work
On the heels of a mostly positive jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (4.6% unemployment is the lowest it's been in nine years), the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) released a more sobering snapshot of the world of work. A briefing by MGI director James Manyika, compiled from the company's extensive research, took a deeper dive into employment numbers. In the United States and the 15 core European Union countries (E.U.-15), there are 285 million adults who are not in the labor force--and at least 100 million of them would like to work more. Some 30% to 45% of the working-age population around the world is underutilized--that is, unemployed, inactive, or underemployed. Manyika says that unemployment figures typically get the most attention at the expense of those who are underemployed.
UK's 4G mobile coverage 'worse than Albania, Panama and Peru'
Britain is "languishing in the digital slow lane" with 4G connectivity lagging behind the networks of countries like Romania, Albania, Panama and Peru, according to the Government's official infrastructure advisers. Market provision of mobile services has left too many "digital deserts" and "not spots" where users cannot get 4G signals, even within major city centres, the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) found. It called on the Government to step in to ensure that basic talk, text and data services are available to all Britons, wherever they live, work and travel, and to make the country ready for next-generation 5G communications. The NIC was asked in March to advise ministers on how the UK can become a "world leader" in the deployment of 5G, which potentially offers ultra-fast, ultra-reliable, ultra-high capacity seamless connectivity to support future technologies like augmented reality, connected vehicles and the "Internet of things". London has UK's best 4G coverage, but slowest speeds But the Commission found that there was still much work to be done to haul the UK out of its 54th position in global rankings for 4G, with typical users able to access the service only 53% of the time.
An Introduction to Deep Learning and it's role for IoT/ future cities

When you throw an event hoping to draw 400 people but an audience of 29,000 shows up, do you think it's a good sign indicating you're onto something? That incredible interest is what happened in Beijing the week of 28 November 2016 at the International Summit on Machine Learning and Industry Application. The event's 20 speakers gathered from across industries and academia to offer their insights about machine learning trends and new directions. For the keynote address, Dinesh Nirmal, vice president, analytics development, at IBM, teamed up with Kent Ting, vice president, IBM Analytics Global Consulting Group, at IBM. Nirmal and Ting talked about the IBM focus on machine learning and the company's efforts to enable developers in China and elsewhere. Of particular interest to the audience was their demo of IBM Watson Machine Learning, a full-service IBM Bluemix platform offering.
'Overly specialised graduates risk replacement by machines'
Universities must not teach degree courses that are too specialised because of the risk that increasingly intelligent machines will put their graduates out of a job, the new vice-provost for research at Imperial College London has warned. Nick Jennings, who is a leading expert in artificial intelligence and was the UK government's chief scientific adviser for national security for the past six years, said that universities instead needed to give their students a deep understanding of a subject so that they can continue to learn in the future. His comments add to the debate around whether increasingly capable AI will replace white-collar jobs in the legal, financial analysis and accountancy sectors, and what universities need to do so their graduates still have an edge over machines. "I think you need to be clear where you're teaching skills versus core understanding," Professor Jennings told Times Higher Education. Universities cannot end up "churning out" graduates who have specialised in a skill that could be made obsolete "and can't understand much else", he warned.
The Public Policy Implications of Artificial Intelligence – Initialized Capital
I think there are three things that are going to affect the world in incredibly significant ways over the next decade and they are 1) Climate change 2) CRISPR and 3) artificial intelligence. I wanted to work in one of those and be helpful. Because of my background, AI made the most sense. Along with conducting fundamental research, OpenAI can also help increase the level of knowledge that's available on how to use, regulate and evaluate this technology. NIPS is probably the single largest AI conference in the field and it's happening in Barcelona right now. There's a joke among researchers that NIPS is where people get together to discuss papers that came out four months ago. That's because the paper deadline was then, and the pace of modern AI research is so fast that much of the industry has subsequently moved onto new techniques and new papers.
