Apple will charge £65 to replace one of its easily loseable AirPods

Apple will charge £69 to replace one of its new earphones. The company's tiny, wireless new headphones were released this week and are being hailed as a leap forward for the technology. But those same features mean that they are easily lost – they are small and light, and there's no simple way of finding out where they are if they go missing. Apple has now confirmed what it will do if that does happen. It will sell people a new AirPod for £65, it said, and it will replace the charging case that they come in for the same price.

London, 15 December 2016 – Luminance, a pioneer of artificial intelligence for the legal industry, has secured funding from Talis Capital, which values the company at over $20 million. Launched in September, with the backing of Invoke Capital and Magic Circle law firm Slaughter & May, demand for Luminance's product is growing rapidly, with the company recently completing its tenth data room project.

Science Can Restore America's Faith in Democracy

In the aftermath of a contentious presidential campaign, there are signs that many Americans have lost faith in democracy, with allegations of election fraud, suggestions of Russian involvement, and complaints about the electoral college. But the problem runs still deeper: Like most other countries, individual states in the US employ the antiquated plurality voting system, in which each voter casts a vote for a single candidate, and the person who amasses the largest number of votes is declared the winner. If there is one thing that voting experts unanimously agree on, it is that plurality voting is a bad idea, or at least a badly outdated one. Ariel Procaccia is assistant professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. He is co-founder of the not-for-profit websites RoboVote.org In fact, for centuries economists, mathematicians, political scientists, and more recently computer scientists have designed and studied better approaches to voting.


ICYMI: Amazon made its first drone-powered delivery

Today on In Case You Missed It: Amazon has been testing drone deliveries for three years now, even having to move to the UK to keep it going once the FAA changed its UAV guidelines. The company released a video of its first fully autonomous drone delivery, which happened on December 7. Meanwhile a team of researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory dug into what would happen if a sizable meteorite hit the ocean and the modeling shows a substantial amount of water vapor would get thrown into the stratosphere, which would not do great things for climate change. Finally, the Danish Neighborhood Watch came out with a robbery-preventing Christmas light and app combination to deter robbers-- and provide laughs for the rest of us. BMW and IBM partner to develop artificial intelligence car tech

BMW is working with American technology giant IBM to co-develop artificial intelligent technology that will one day be used in road cars. Researchers and engineers from BMW are working at IBM's Munich headquarters for its Watson Internet of Things (IoT) technology. They'll help develop IBM's Watson cognitive system for integration into automotive products, which will be able to learn from the physical world and pass intelligence back to it. BMW is providing the IBM site with four i8s to be used as prototypes for the new artificial intelligence systems. The systems will run on IBM's Bluemix cloud platform, which IBM says will enable Watson technology to heighten a driver's connection with their car.

Walter Pitts was used to being bullied. He'd been born into a tough family in Prohibition-era Detroit, where his father, a boiler-maker, had no trouble raising his fists to get his way. One afternoon in 1935, they chased him through the streets until he ducked into the local library to hide. The library was familiar ground, where he had taught himself Greek, Latin, logic, and mathematics--better than home, where his father insisted he drop out of school and go to work. Outside, the world was messy. Inside, it all made sense. Not wanting to risk another run-in that night, Pitts stayed hidden until the library closed for the evening. Alone, he wandered through the stacks of books until he came across Principia Mathematica, a three-volume tome written by Bertrand Russell and Alfred Whitehead between 1910 and 1913, which attempted to reduce all of mathematics to pure logic. Pitts sat down and began to read. For three days he remained in the library until he had read each volume cover to cover--nearly 2,000 pages in all--and had identified several mistakes. Deciding that Bertrand Russell himself needed to know about these, the boy drafted a letter to Russell detailing the errors.
