NICKELBACK ATTACK Lavigne knocks Zuck over mean crack about band
Despite Avril Lavigne's 2015 split from Chad Kroeger, she still has his back. Lavigne came to the defense of Kroeger and his band Nickelback on Thursday after Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg made a joke at the band's expense. The diss came in a YouTube video shared on Tuesday, in which Zuckerberg promotes his home artificial intelligence assistant Jarvis (voiced by Morgan Freeman). While demonstrating how the A.I. system can help with everyday tasks around the house, Zuckerberg asks Jarvis to play "some good Nickelback songs." I'm afraid I can't do that," Jarvis answers. "There are no good Nickelback songs." That was actually a test," Zuckerberg responds.
A universal basic income: the answer to poverty, insecurity, and health inequality?
For four years in the mid-1970s an unusual experiment took place in the small Canadian town of Dauphin. Statistically significant benefits for those who took part included fewer physician contacts related to mental health and fewer hospital admissions for "accident and injury." Mental health diagnoses in Dauphin also fell. Once the experiment ended, these public health benefits evaporated.1 What was the treatment being tested? It was what has become known as a basic income--a regular, unconditional payment made to each and every citizen.
AI Alarmism: why smart people believe dumb things about our future AI overlords
Maciej Cegłowski (previously) gave this talk, "Superintelligence: The Idea That Eats Smart People," at Web Camp Zagreb last October, spending 45 minutes delving into the origin of the idea that computers are going to become apocalyptic, self-programming, superintelligent basilisks that end all live on Earth (and variations on this theme) and then explaining why this fundamentally evidence-free, fuzzy idea has colonized so many otherwise brilliant people -- including people like Stephen Hawking -- and why it's an irrational and potentially harmful belief system. As a science fiction writer, I've spent a fair bit of time noodling with these ideas in both story form and essays: True Names, the novella I wrote with Ben Rosenbaum about this, was nominated for a Hugo Award; and Charlie Stross and I wrote a novel on the theme, Rapture of the Nerds, and then there's my essay on the Singularity as a spiritual belief system that can pass for a scientific prediction. One thing I'm keenly aware of is that the aesthetic appeal of futuristic Singularity predictions is firmly rooted in the here-and-now: it's nice to think that there is a thing called "progress," and that we're in the midst of it; it's nice to think that when progress outstrips your capacity to make sense of it, it's because it's transcended human comprehension (and not, say, because your time has past and you are becoming irrelevant to a field and discourse you once dominated); it's nice to think that the privilege you enjoy in the midst of great deprivation is in the service to a better future for all humanity, and not a fundamentally unfair situation that you would rise up in fury over if the roles were reversed. Cegłowski's expert puncturing of the arguments for "AI Alarmism" was prompted by philosopher Nick Bostrom's bestselling book Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies, which is a fun read but which also palms a lot of cards in the construction of its arguments. I believe the greater social meaning of AI Alarmism is the twin phenomena of the worry of an ever-larger class of have-nots whose lives are upended by uneven economic returns from technological disruption (in other words, the problem isn't that only some of us have to clean toilets, while all of us have to use them; it's that the dividends from self-cleaning toilets never accrue to the toilet-cleaners they displace); and the blithe dismissal of this worry by an ever-smaller, ever-richer 1%, who use the story of AI as a spiritual belief system that declares this division to be natural, inevitable, and, ultimately, beneficial.

The new song, 'Joyful Time in The City', was created in two short weeks by Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence technology. The melody and lyrics were formed through detailed analysis of over 50 classic Christmas carols, which the computer used to construct its interpretation of what makes a great carol. Machine Learning tools identified patterns in the tunes and used those to predict what should come next. The final result is a heart-warming mix of Christmas carols from decades past and popular songs from the present day. The capacity of machines to process large quantities of data and recognize patterns far surpasses that of humans.

It's nice to see that an entire team of robots is only slightly better at making Christmas cookies than I am: Somebody really, really needs to let NAO out of the oven. All legged robots should be required to wear cute socks at all times. According to Plymouth University, Plymouth University's Mannequin Challenge video is the best Mannequin Challenge video of all time: You know, I was skeptical at first, but now I kinda believe it. At this point, I don't think that Santa (or the post office) has to worry about Snake Monsters stealing their jobs: If RE2's HDMS robot seems suspiciously capable at decorating things, it's because there's a human on the other end of it: I think if you're a giant robotics company with a marketing budget and stuff, you should be required to put REAL ROBOTS in your holiday videos.

IBM on track to get more than 7,000 U.S. patents in 2016
IBM wants to put the patent war in perspective. Big Blue said that it is poised to get the most U.S. patents of any tech company for the 24th year in a row. In 2015, IBM received more than 7,355 patents, down slightly from 7,534 in 2014. A spokesperson for IBM said the company is on track to receive well over 7,000 patents in 2016. In 2016, IBM is also hitting another interesting milestone, with more than 1,000 patents for artificial intelligence and cognitive computing.
