Beer has a rich history in London. Even before the British Empire, Shakespeare or Buckingham Palace, people were crowding into pubs to gulp down local ales. Versions of pale ales, IPAs and porters were created in the U.K. long before they were trendy favorites on California and New York's microbrew scenes. Now a small startup is attempting to add its own twist to London's beer-making tradition. The company, IntelligentX, has invented a beer-recipe algorithm that determines the amount of hops, water, yeast and grain that should go into each beer.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau summed up this revolution in Emile, his 1762 treatise on education. When looking for the rules of conduct in life, Rousseau found them "in the depths of my heart, traced by nature in characters which nothing can efface. I need only consult myself with regard to what I wish to do; what I feel to be good is good, what I feel to be bad is bad." Humanist thinkers such as Rousseau convinced us that our own feelings and desires were the ultimate source of meaning, and that our free will was, therefore, the highest authority of all.

For as long as humans have had consciousness -- two or two hundred millennia depending on who you ask -- human scholars have made great efforts to understand and define what that means. The most facile and purely conceptual description of consciousness might be that it is an awareness of the self within the context of the world. But without an understanding of the underlying mechanism, consciousness keeps chasing its tail. This is, in part, why neuroscientists have successfully interjected themselves in the ongoing conversation about consciousness by pointing to physical phenomena within the brain. But linking the metaphysical to the physical still results in the sort of quasi-scientific, quasi-philosophical overreach that gets academics laughed out of faculty lounges and labeled eccentric.

Tesla Autopilot's new radar technology predicts an accident caught on dashcam a second later
Just a few weeks ago, we published a report about how Tesla's new radar technology for the Autopilot is already proving useful in some potentially dangerous situations. We now have a new piece of evidence that is so spectacularly clear that it's worth updating that report. The video of an accident on the highway in the Netherlands caught on the dashcam of a Tesla Model X shows the Autopilot's forward collision warning predicting an accident before it could be detected by the driver. With the release of Tesla's version 8.0 software update in September, the automaker announced a new radar processing technology that was directly pushed over-the-air to all its vehicles equipped with the first generation Autopilot hardware. One of the main features enabled by the new radar processing capacity is the ability for the system to see ahead of the car in front of you and basically track two cars ahead on the road.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicks off in Las Vegas next week, with technology companies from around the globe descending on "Sin City" to showcase their latest gadgets and offer a glimpse into our digital future. From the camcorder and the CD player to the Xbox and the plasma TV, some of the best-known technologies of all time have debuted at CES, and some of the most famous industry figures have given keynotes, including Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Elon Musk. This year marks the show's 50th annivarsary. The first CES kicked off in 1967, with 250 exhibitors and 17,500 attendees gathered in New York City. Since then, CES has grown by more than 10-fold, and now encompasses both traditional and non-traditional tech industries.
Bayesian Optimization with Shape Constraints

In typical applications of Bayesian optimization, minimal assumptions are made about the objective function being optimized. This is true even when researchers have prior information about the shape of the function with respect to one or more argument. We make the case that shape constraints are often appropriate in at least two important application areas of Bayesian optimization: (1) hyperparameter tuning of machine learning algorithms and (2) decision analysis with utility functions. We describe a methodology for incorporating a variety of shape constraints within the usual Bayesian optimization framework and present positive results from simple applications which suggest that Bayesian optimization with shape constraints is a promising topic for further research.
The Pessimistic Limits of Margin-based Losses in Semi-supervised Learning

We show that for linear classifiers defined by convex marginbased surrogate losses that are monotonically decreasing, it is impossible to construct any semi-supervised approach that is able to guarantee an improvement over the supervised classifier measured by this surrogate loss. For non-monotonically decreasing loss functions, we demonstrate safe improvements are possible. INTRODUCTION Semi-supervised learning has delivered encouraging results in various settings, e.g. for object detection in computer vision [1], protein function prediction from sequence data [2] or prediction of cancer recurrence [3] in the biomedical domain and part-of-speech tagging in natural language processing [4]. In other settings, however, using unlabeled data has been shown to lead to a decrease in performance when compared to the supervised solution [4, 5]. For semi-supervised classifiers to be used safely in practice, we may at least want some guarantee that they improve performance over their supervised alternatives.
