Apple prices rocket because of Brexit-inspired pound sterling slump
Apple is pushing up the price of apps by 25 per cent to make up for the plunging value of the pound. The prices are now the same as they are in dollars. The change is thought to be a response to the pound's loss of value since Brexit. The June referendum and the policy statements that followed have pushed the pound to historic lows and seem to have forced Apple to adjust, since it does its accounting in US dollars. Artificial intelligence adoption driving revenue growth for businesses: Infosys
NEW DELHI: Artificial intelligence (AI) will play fundamental role in the success of an organisation's strategy but stringent ethical standards are also needed to ensure the success of the new technology, a report by Infosys today said. The report said organisations that have already deployed or have plans to deploy AI technologies expect to see a 39 per cent increase on an average in their revenues by 2020, alongside a 37 per cent reduction in costs. Also, companies in India and China are much more likely to state that they are ahead of industry competitors when it comes to AI use, followed by Germany, the US, the UK, France, it added. About 76 per cent respondents cited AI as fundamental to the success of their organisation's strategy, and 64 per cent said future growth of the company is dependent on large-scale AI adoption. The report also highlighted the ethical and job related concerns with 62 per cent respondents saying stringent ethical standards are needed to ensure the success of AI. "However, most respondents seem optimistic about redeploying displaced employees with higher value work. The majority, 85 per cent, plan to train employees about the benefits and use of AI," the report said.

Much of the current focus of the debate about the impact of artificial intelligence has been on how the'rise of the robots' will spend the end for many job roles. Yet that mischaracterises the true effects according to a new report from Infosys, released today, to coincide with the World Economic Forum in Davos. The report, Amplifying Human Potential: Towards Purposeful Artificial Intelligence, concludes that the implementation of AI doesn't necessarily mean job losses. In fact, 80 percent of businesses adopting AI which have replaced, or plan to replace, workers with technology, will be far more likely to retain, retrain and upskill those employees impacted. The study also claims that the adoption of AI will mean a number of other important benefits for organisations including a predicted 39 percent revenue rise by 2020 as a result of the implementation.

And one company is working toward making that a reality in a not-too-distant future. French aerospace giant Airbus, commonly known for building airplanes, has been working on a flying car since mid-2016. Called Vahana (a Sanskrit word that means the vehicle of gods), it is meant to be "a self-piloted flying vehicle platform for individual passenger and cargo transport." The project is a part of the company's A 3 division, located in Silicon Valley, California.

Microsoft Corp. and its competitors should eschew artificial intelligence systems that replace people instead of maximizing their time, Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella said in an interview Monday. "The fundamental need of every person is to be able to use their time more effectively, not to say, 'let us replace you'," Nadella said in an interview at the DLD conference in Munich. "This year and the next will be the key to democratizing AI. The most exciting thing to me is not just our own promise of AI as exhibited by these products, but to take that capability and put it in the hands of every developer and every organization." Nadella is pushing Microsoft into consumer and industrial applications of software that can make inferences about its environment.

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers have finally cracked problems that they've worked on for decades, from Go to human-level speech recognition. A key piece was the ability to gather and learn on mountains of data, which pulled error rates past the success line. In short, big data has transformed AI, to an almost unreasonable level. Blockchain technology could transform AI too, in its own particular ways. Some applications of blockchains to AI are mundane, like audit trails on AI models. Some appear almost unreasonable, like AI that can own itself -- AI DAOs. All of them are opportunities. This article will explore these applications. Before we discuss applications, let's first review what's different about blockchains compared to traditional big-data distributed databases like MongoDB. We can think of blockchains as "blue ocean" databases: they escape the "bloody red ocean" of sharks competing in an existing market, opting instead to be in a blue ocean of uncontested market space. Famous blue ocean examples are Wii for video game consoles (compromise raw performance, but have new mode of interaction), or Yellow Tail for wines (ignore the pretentious specs for wine lovers; make wine more accessible to beer lovers). By traditional database standards, traditional blockchains like Bitcoin are terrible: low throughput, low capacity, high latency, poor query support, and so on.
London startup launches chatbot to help renters exercise their rights
London-based startup RentersUnion has created what it's hoping will be a socially useful chatbot, pitching their web-based bot as a robot replacement for (expensive) housing lawyers. The intended user is anyone not on the London property ladder, and thus at the mercy of landlords, tenancy agreements and (apparently ever-inflating) rents. Not that the chatbot can do much about the latter problem, sadly. But it does offer a little automated help with parsing wordy tenancy agreements to, for example, extract salient details such as fees in an effort to empower a downtrodden section of society. Visitors to the bot are offered a selection of topics it can help with -- from issues with their energy bills to problems with repairs or questions around fees.
