On the Usability of Probably Approximately Correct Implication Bases

From a practical point of view, computing implication bases of formal contexts is a challenging task. The reason for this is twofold: on the one hand, bases of formal contexts can be of exponential size [14] (see also an earlier work [12] for the same result presented in different terms), and thus just writing out the result can take a long time. On the other hand, even in cases where implication bases can be small, efficient methods to compute them are unknown in general, and running times may thus be much higher than necessary. This is particularly true for computing the canonical basis, where only very few algorithms [9, 15] are known, which all in addition to the canonical basis have to compute the complete concept lattice. Artificial intelligence should enhance human workers, not replace them, at least according to the CEOs of IBM and Microsoft. Ginni Rometty and Satya Nadella made clear their view of the role of AI in a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, just a few hours after Rometty circulated IBM's three guiding principles for the development of cognitive technologies to company staff. Less dramatic and snappily expressed than Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics, IBM's three principles are nevertheless intended to limit the harm the introduction of AI technologies causes. The first thing to understand is the purpose of these technologies. For IBM, Rometty said, "it will not be man or machine: Our purpose is to augment and be in service of what humans do."


Microsoft labels Windows 7 'outdated' as it pushes Windows users to Windows 10

Microsoft on Monday reminded customers running Windows 7 that they have just three years of support remaining, told them that the aged OS was "long outdated" and urged them to upgrade to Windows 10. Windows 7 will exit what Microsoft calls Extended Support on Jan. 14, 2020; at that point, the company will stop all security updates. Microsoft used the three-years-and-counting milestone to simultaneously denigrate Windows 7 and promote its successor. "Windows 7 is based on long-outdated security architectures," said Markus Nitschke, the head of Microsoft Germany, in a post to a German-language company blog, adding that the OS "does not meet the requirements of modern technology, nor the high security requirements of IT departments." On the other hand, Nitschke continued, "with Windows 10, we offer our customers the highest level of security and functionality at the cutting edge." Three years ago, the company used some of the same tactics when it disparaged Windows XP, whose retirement was then quickly approaching, and trumpeted Windows 7 as its replacement.


Drone video shows a huge crack in Antarctic ice

Yesterday, the Halley VI Research Station was forced to close its Antarctic research base amid rising fears it could fall into a huge ice chasm. Shocking new drone footage has now been released that shows just how massive the growing crack in the ice is. The worrying footage has forced the British research base to relocate 14 miles (22 km) across the Brunt Ice Shelf and close its doors for the winter. The footage shows a 25 mile-long (40km) crack that appears to be a few feet deep. In some areas, the crack has split into two, leaving behind small islands of ice.

Airbus Will Test Flying Autonomous Car Prototype By End Of 2017, CEO Says

Airbus expects to test a prototype for an autonomous flying car by then end of the year, the group's CEO announced Monday according to Reuters. "One hundred years ago, urban transport went underground, now we have the technological wherewithal to go above ground," Airbus CEO Tom Enders said during the DLD digital tech conference in Munich. Enders hinted Airbus could fly a test vehicle for single-person transport by the end of 2017. Airbus launched its Urban Air Mobility division last year, which was created to explore concepts such as a vehicle to transport people or a helicopter-type vehicle that can for multiple riders. The goal of the new division is to allow individuals to book rides using an app, like Uber or Lyft, but for the skies.


Galaxy Note 7 explosion chaos inspires fire-extinguishing batteries

A team of researchers at Stanford University has created a lithium-ion battery designed to extinguish itself if it ever overheated and caught fire. The battery contains flame retardant chemical compound triphenyl phosphate (TPP), which sits inside a shell within the electrolyte fluid. The shell melts at 150C (302F), releasing the TPP and thereby eliminating any risk of a full-blown fire. In tests cited by the research, published in the journal Science Advances, the burning battery extinguished itself after 0.4 seconds. I've tried them in the past, and while they are nice to think about, they are always overly vague, difficult to accomplish in a year, trite, or just don't get done (or attempted). This year I decided to try something different instead of just not making resolutions at all. I set out some professional goals for myself as a Data Scientist. Open source software is only as good as its community and/or developer(s).


Microsoft CEO Nadella: AI should augment human workers, not replace them - TechRepublic

At the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland on Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella explained that his company has designed its artificial intelligence (AI) solutions specifically to augment human workers, not replace them. Speaking as part of a panel discussion with other tech leaders, Nadella said that AI, much like user experience, can be designed with a goal in mind. While some are designing AI systems to think like humans in order to replace them, he said, Microsoft is designing systems to assist humanity. Nadella said that Microsoft was utilizing "pragmatic principles that can guide AI creation." He also mentioned that this isn't a new strategy for Microsoft, as he pointed out this idea in his 10 rules for AI that he posted in June 2016.
