Robots are evolving so quickly that the big concern may be how much we don't know about AI
In Davos right now, the world's best and best-performing economic minds are gathered for their annual bout of elite networking. You know you're not invited because a ticket costs $35,000, and that's before the cost of membership, which is also required, and even more expensive. But we get news reports from the proceedings and the most interesting one today concerns the World Economic Forum's recent report which claims the biggest risk in 2017 is people losing their jobs to robots. The word out of Davos is we have nothing to fear. If you don't believe them, you might find some comfort in a story about Donald Trump that's been kicking around for a couple of years that is, well, intriguing. The next Leader of the Free World has never used a computer. It's great fun (Matt Novak has tenaciously taken up the baton at Gizmodo), and not at all as far-fetched as you might be thinking right now. We know Trump tweets, badly. But it is actually surprisingly difficult to find evidence of him looking comfortable behind a MacBook.
IBM CEO Ginni Rometty lays out guidelines for ethical AI development - SiliconANGLE
With great power comes great responsibility: That was the gist of a set of principles for artificial intelligence development laid forth by IBM Corp. Chief Executive Ginni Rometty on Tuesday. Rometty (above) has made AI, or what IBM calls cognitive computing, the centerpiece of the tech giant's attempt to recharge its growth. In a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, she made the mostly optimistic case that AI, intelligently used, will be the foundation of the fourth industrial revolution. On the panel with Rometty were Ron Gutman, an entrepreneur whose relation to AI is based mostly on how it will transform healthcare, along with Joi Ito, head of MIT's media lab and leading spokesperson on AI ethics, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. But Rometty made perhaps the biggest splash, issuing a set of three principles that she called "Principles for the Cognitive Era."
Artificial intelligence used to predict death rates of heart patients - SiliconANGLE
Companies are already using artificial intelligence to play board games and recommend content, and now researchers want to use AI for something a bit more personal: predicting how long heart patients have to live. In a paper recently published in the journal Radiology, researchers at the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences used machine learning to predict the mortality rates of patients suffering from pulmonary hypertension, a rare and serious lung disorder that restricts the amount of oxygen going to the heart. If left untreated, roughly one-third of patients suffering from PH die within five years. Because the disorder is worsens over time, it is important for doctors to accurately estimate a patient's life expectancy to determine how aggressively they should treat the condition. Using machine learning, the researchers trained an AI using over eight years of patient health data.

This week we are celebrating Computer Science Education Week around the globe. In this "age of acceleration," in which advances in technology and the globalization of business are transforming entire industries and society itself, it's more critical than ever for everyone to be digitally literate, especially our kids. This is particularly true for women and girls who, while representing roughly 50 percent of the world's population, account for less than 20 percent of computer science graduates in 34 OECD countries, according to this report. This has far-reaching societal and economic consequences. One issue sometimes cited for the dearth of women in computing fields is the lack of professional role models who could inspire girls to pursue their STEM dreams. We've attempted to counteract this by asking 17 women within Microsoft's global research organization their views on what's likely to occur in their fields in 2017.
Business leaders urge new thinking in age of artificial intelligence
It's no secret that automated machines and robots are rapidly replacing human workers. In Europe, concerns about the loss of good-paying jobs to automation is so strong that the idea of a universal basic income is gaining traction. France, for one example, could lose three million jobs by 2025 due to automation, a former education minister campaigning for the French presidency has argued. The topic has been front of mind this week for participants at the World Economic Forum's annual summit in Davos, Switzerland. There, CBS News asked business leaders to look past the hope and hype of artifical intelligence and reflect on the negatives of automation.

The AI that can write a symphony just for you

Japanese researchers have developed an AI headset that creates tailor-made music in order to improve the wearer's mood. The AI analyzes the person's brain waves and writes tunes that match their personal sensitivity- and it only takes one minute to create the music using synthesized notes. The AI studied relationships between music and emotions in order to write tunes that coincides with a human's personal sensitivity - and it only takes one minute to create the music using synthesized notes The AI was fed information about the relationship between music and emotions before it began composing music. Volunteers were asked to listen to music while their brain waves were recorded.
