A Glossary of Linguistic Terms
Warning: This web page was originally constructed to help computer science students who were taking my module on natural language processing. Some terms may be used differently by different authors. Unless otherwise stated, definitions are based on the English language. If you find any errors, please e-mail me at p.coxhead@cs.bham.ac.uk. The verb in an active sentence can be said to be in the active voice. Examples are colourless and green which qualify ideas in Colourless green ideas sleep furiously. Adjectives can also appear after verbs like be, e.g. Examples are furiously which qualifies the verb sleep in Colourless green ideas sleep furiously, or intensely which qualifies stared in He stared at me intensely. Adverbs can also qualify adjectives, e.g. Many English adverbs are formed from an adjective plus the ending -ly. Words like very, which can only qualify adjectives or adverbs but not verbs, are sometimes called adverbs, but are perhaps best put in a separate category. In its broadest sense, an affix can be a prefix, a suffix, or an infix. More narrowly, infixes are sometimes treated separately. The stop and fricative must be produced in a very similar positions in the mouth.

AI SPEC FOR QAA BENCHMARKING PANEL
Note added 3 Mar 2007: I and some others had some reservations about the document because we felt it did not adequately distinguish degrees that were mainly concerned with training for particular vocations involving use of computers and development of software systems from degrees that were more concerned with teaching the foundations of the subject and preparing future researchers to extend both the foundations and the techniques. This meant, in particular, that some of us felt that there was insufficient emphasis on the mathematical content of computer science and the possibility of doing theoretical (e.g. I personally felt then, and still feel that that expressed a narrowness of vision in the majority of members of the computer science community. The more detailed overview is given in section C, as an indication of the scope of the field. This might be used by reviewers considering degrees in AI, not in order to define what should or should not be in such a degree, but in order to provide some background that might be useful when assessing an AI degree course, or possibly when designing one. There is no implication that everything mentioned here must be included in a degree with "Artificial Intelligence" in its title, or that topics not included here are excluded.
The SIM_AGENT Package
Unlike many so-called'agent toolkits', like PRS/Jack, Mozart, Alice, and several more, that are aimed mainly at development of systems involving large numbers of highly distributed fairly homogeneous relatively'small' agents, SimAgent can be used for such purposes (and was used in that way for a while by Matthias Scheutz at Notre Dame University) but (like ACT-R, COGENT, and the original SOAR) SimAgent is primarily designed to support design and implementation of very complex agents, each composed of very different interacting components (like a human mind) where the whole thing is embedded in an environment that could be a mixture of physical objects and other agents of many sorts, as half-jokingly depicted here: That schema accommodates a wide variety of specific architecture types, which differ according to which mechanisms and information structures occur in which boxes, and how they are connected to one another and to the environment, as described in this overview. The above diagram is misleading in various ways because it suggest that the perception mechanisms and action mechanisms are separate from each other and can only communicate via the'central' mechanisms, whereas it is clear (as James Gibson pointed out in his 1966 book The Senses Considered as Perceptual Systems) action and perception are deeply integrated, e.g. the constant use of saccades, changes of vergence, changes of focus in vision, and the need to move your hand when it is used to perceive shape, texture, weight, flexibility, hardness, etc. of objects. So a more accurate, but less clear depiction of the ideas in the CogAff architecture schema is the following (with thanks to Dean Petters, for help with this diagram, indicating that action and perception mechanisms overlap, as pointed out by J.J.Gibson in 1966(Referenced above). Revised, more realistic CogAff Architecture Schema, e.g. with deeper integration between action and perception The horizontal discs represent (usually "fuzzy" boundaries between different levels of functionality. It is possible for some of the information-processing mechanisms to straddle two or more layers.
Translation Tools: New Approaches to an Old Discipline
For example, type the question, Automated language translation is it an idea whose time has come? Now do the same with this sentence: Reboot your computer and try again. Youll wind up with this: Their computer and attempt still again load. Language translation software isnt likely to allow you to lay off your bilingual staffers at least not right away. But applied with discrimination and lots of preparation, translation tools can be fantastic productivity aids.
Samsung launches Galaxy S III with voice and face recognition
Samsung on Thursday unveiled a larger Galaxy S III smartphone in London, and said the phone would be sold in the U.S. this summer after launching in Europe on May 29. Samsung didn't name a U.S. wireless carrier or the price for the smartphone, but said the U.S. version will run over LTE and HSPA, an indication it could run on AT&T's or T-Mobile's network. A white version of the Galaxy S III was unveiled by Samsung's president of mobile communications, J.K. Shin, at a crowded London media event that featured a live orchestra and was also webcast. The Galaxy S III, will run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and will have a 4.8-in. It includes an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera.

Jan Krikke After 50 years of research and tinkering, machine translation might be ready to compete with human translators. Several companies have announced breakthroughs or substantial progress in MT research in recent months. In January, for example, Steven Klein, CEO of New York-based Meaningful Machines, announced that his company successfully tested new translation algorithms that he says could lead to translation engines replacing human translators. "While our current prototype is already outperforming other systems on limited resources," says Klein, "we expect to see significant improvement to our quality as both the target language corpus and the dictionary continue to increase in size, with a realistic goal of reaching human quality." "Although the prototype is only partially complete," says Klein, "we recently began blind testing from Spanish to English, and our system is already performing at higher quality levels on the BLEU (Bilingual Evaluation Understudy) scale than any system we are aware of--0.6092. Systran, whose Spanish-to-English system is one of the best, scored a 0.5494 when we ran it through the same test, and the Systran system has been through many decades of development and incremental improvements." Meaningful Machines' test has not been independently verified, and the goal of reaching near-human quality translation will probably depend on some degree of pre- and post-editing for years to come. But, the growing number of global corporations (such as Philips, Samsung, and HP) and international agencies and institutions (such as the UN and the European Commission) using the technology illustrates that machine translation--the first nonnumerical application of AI--is finally delivering practical solutions. Popular perception of MT has suffered from low-quality "gisting" translation that Web-based translation engines, such as Babelfish and other online services, generate. But MT engines designed for limited domains, and tailor-made systems that use controlled language, are already delivering services. The site makes available a wealth of information previously inaccessible to non-Japanese speakers. MT has also made it to the desktop. The system is self-learning--it improves over time as its associative memory grows.
Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition: Indiana University Bloomington
The Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition (aka the Fluid Analogies Research Group, or simply FARG) is an interdisciplinary center for research in cognitive science, directed by Douglas Hofstadter. CRCC is affiliated with the Cognitive Science Program at IU, and has close ties with the Computer Science Department. CRCC research focuses mainly on emergent computational models of creative analogical thinking and its subcognitive substrate -- namely, fluid concepts. Several computer programs modeling the interplay between concepts and perception in the course of analogy-making have been developed; these include the Copycat and Tabletop programs. The Letter Spirit project, modeling the perception and creation of style in the world of letterforms, has now resulted in a Letter Spirit program capable of designing and evaluating gridfonts.
